Turbo Manifold

Was having a look over this at work today what do you lot think? Its the first one we have used made like this with an extrernal built in. Its Thick wall 321 Ti. Yay or Nay?

  2. #2
NAY I'm afraid, wastegate outlet is in worst possible place.

When you say 321Ti, I presume you mean stainless? Which won't be Ti

sorry mate its 321 titanium blended stainless

    You sure it's not inconel?
My new manifold is being made from 321

Yea definatly mate its 321 blended

Not really an expert it metal alloys, i do know they do mix Ti with certain grades of 321. It's expensive stuff.

Can take much higher temperatures often associated when using anti-lag

Hit the nail on the head mate thats what this has been made for excessive heat capabilities

Well it's made from the right stuff and the welds look nice, just ashame the EWG is where it is.

Forgive my ignorance Danny, but why is the wastegate outlet in the worst place? (Not having a dig, just curious!)
  10. #10
Its not often the manifold which needs the expensive materials to cope with high EGT's, its mostly the turbine (housing and wheel), most OEMs are limited to 1050degC unless using TiAl wheels, in which its around 980degC

harder to reroute the screamer pipe into the legal place (before the cat). this means that the EWG where it is the hot pipe will have to go over the top off yohr engine nesr all sensibe parts in order to relocate it to the exhaust pipe

oh and 321 stainless is pretty much 304 stainless but with the addition on Ti, upto 0.7% by weight. So these are just 321 stainless
  13. #13
You want the wastegate to be as efficient as possible. It makes a huge difference on higher power/high boost cars.
Having the gasses flow past where you want them to go out is not ideal.
If you look at all race turbo manifolds and high end turbo manifolds (including f1 manifolds) you will see they favour the external wastegate flow over the actual turbo.

Here's some quick examples to show you what I'm trying to explain

    Cheers for that Marc

The turbo that's soon to be on it's way to me uses a titainum wheel

Where do you get your bends buddy? Struggling to source anything better than 304 at a reasonable price.

What turbo you going for? The only off the shelf TiAl wheel'd turbos I know of are BorgWarners EFR range, and last time I spoke to BorgWarner they werent available outside of the US as they couldnt keep up with demand.

The next step would be a twin scroll turbo to improve driveability/response but that would require a more complicated manifold which probably wouldnt be packageable in a saxo engine bay

Don,t some evo turbo's run ti wheels etc?
And twin scroll manifols can be packaged quite small, evo turbos are the new fashion upgrade on c20let Cora/Nova's.
  18. #18
Evo 6 tommi used a Ti turbine wheel and twin scroll.
A good turbo choice for big power. Quite a big exhaust housing though.. I supposed some of that was negated by the fact you have the Ti wheel.

As regards to the bends 99% of applications do not need more than 304ss.
If you want 321ss you won't get it cheap. Your paying for high end materials you pay high end price.
