Will i have to run a dump valve?

  1. #1
In the middle of building my vts turbo, just wondering if i have to run a dump valve, or will the wastegate built into turbo be good enough?
  2. #2
You don't "have" to run one,

But there is much debate about not running one causing damage to the turbo over time,

There's also great debate about whether or not it reduces your spool times due to turbo stall

As when you close the throttle if there's no where for the air to go(no dump valve) it tries to force its way back past the turbine blades

Hmmm a just dont want the dump noise for reasons you know about haha. Maybe a recirculating dump would be alot quieter?
  4. #4
If you didn't have the dump you'll still get the turbo stall/chatter noise anyway lol

Recirc will be quieter... I wouldn't worry too much about it mate tbh
  5. #5
why would you not want that noise lol?

Didnt think insurers fitted Sound recorders to your car?

Aslong as they no there's a turbo there, i doubt they'll start rooting through your engine for anything undeclared tbh
  9. #9
Yeah there not really gonna know about the turbo. Only getting used on a weekend so i refuse to pay another £1k to declare it.
  10. #10
Didnt think you would get insurance on a saxo turbo lol, i wonder what it would be for a 17 year old
  11. #11
i doubt theyd really care much about an undeclared dump valve if youve got an undeclared turbo then lol

i found admiral would insure me on a turbo vtr, but not a vtr with a vts conversion
  12. #12
I don't think its very smart to announce your intentions on a public forum. There's insurers on here and they have already admitted to searching peoples posts for undecleared mods.

"give us your membership name for 10% off" Yeh right.

Recirculating into an open cone will still make the noise.

A DV will more than likely not be as loud as turbo chatter, turbo chatter sounds mad though..

Big risk mate, only takes a knowledgable police officer to pull you over on a Saturday to check your car over.

The extra £1000 is based on the extra risk you pose as an inexperienced driver with a turbocharged car, perfectly justified in my opinion.

    Just my 2p.

I would avoid skyinsurance for obvious reasons.

Well, you do really have to run a dump valve, because without one your Turbo will be under great strain and pressure.

If I was you i'd go and read a few discussions on the subject then, armed with your new knowledge, put them to rights down at the red lion. You'll feel like Stephen Hawkins.

When I renewed last year and added the turbo it didn't make much difference to the price tbh

    Huh? Lol.

I run a DV on my RS but it only dumps a little, the rest goes through the Turbo.

This puts pressure on the Turbo and will wear it out faster, but chatter sounds great

Many people run no dump valve for turbo chatter, as said some say it harms the tubby some say it doesn't. If you want to keep it subtle get a recirc, there near on silent from my experience.

Also the wastegate built into the turbo and the dump valve are for different jobs.

Cheers guys. Il try a recirc valve, and im paying 1300 on my gti, il give quoting a turbo up but if its rediculouse il run the risk

Don't run a dump valve! Turbo chatter is so good.

    Well try a weaker spring...

lol @ being concerned about the noise of a dump valve, then bolting a big turbo to the exhaust manifold, which is the first thing you see when you open the bonnet!

    Effort!

He could wrap the ECU cover in hardcore jazz mags, the hairy gash euro porn would immediately draw attention once the bonnet was opened!

    Sorted!
