Exhaust/Mani Query

  1. #1
I've spent about 1200 keeping my car on the road.. With its constant breaking down, hopefully it's OK now. So I can finally save for some parts (after 10 months of ownership).

I have had my eyes on a full KAM Racing exhaust system for a while now and will eventually buy one I also wan't a 4-2-1 manifold of some description.

Now from what I gather, unless you know the mechanic this will fail an MOT on emissions? Which is cool with me.

Now my main query is how loud will this be? I REALLY DON'T WANT it to be LOUD. I'm mainly in it for the slight performance increase and the fact my current back box is a rusty looking piece of ass wank. A nice purr would be cool, but nothing ear-deafening or JDM wanna-be.

Anyone got this setup? If so, how loud isit? Though I'll say it now, I'll be fucked if I'm forking out an extra £70 for a silencer in the centre pipe.

You could get a CAT back system which would still give you a noise increase over standard, shouldn't be to loud and would still pass an MOT

Not after noise, after the performance, what is cat back? Is it restrictive?

Do you have a CAT in the manifold or under the car?

    Manifold, it's a MK2.

It'll be loud. Anything saxo related with no centre silencer will be loud, especially decat as well.

FWIW, I've just put a SaxSport 2" on mine, which although de-catted, has a centre silencer, and it's very liveable with on a day to day basis. You can drive through built up areas without looking like a massive spoon, and it's fairly mellow as long as you're off throttle.

Thus I should imagine this will be the case with the Kam Racing system with a centre silencer.

I've had a saxo with a manifold and a non-silenced centre pipe before. Spend the £70. It'll be totally worth it. And probably still too loud.

That's what I don't want, don't wish to be stereotyped as a CHAV, but then again I drive a saxo... So I'm fucked lol. Ugh, might well have to then.. Thanks for your advice,

i have a 4-2-1, supersprint center section (no cat, no silencers) with a piper 3" back box and its not overly loud, low down in the rev range, but has a really nice idle sound to it

Snap dude, I'm after fun performance, and the cars are nice and cheap to mod, (£1200 later lol!) especially compared to say a Clio 182 etc.

However, given their image, it's massively hard to do this without looking like a chav. So I now cycle to work, and only drive it a night, with a bag on my head.

If you're careful, I don't think mine's too bad over standard, it's obviously a bit louder with the decat, but it's not mental or anything. You can pootle about in 30's in like, 4th / 5th gear and not turn heads.

That said, it also feels stronger than it did, although the actual gains are probably very low, it is loud flat out, but then again it's a decat system at 7,000rpm.

If you're at all worried about sound, I'd get the silenced system. Every time. Mine's still louder than I'd like.

MuZiZZle off here has a decat and race pipe with a Piper backbox, which is supposedly one of the quietest, and the idle is more than the 100db the iPhone sound meter can detect lol.

the saxsport only has one silencer. That box on the centre pipe is empty and is there for the sports cat version.

Basically if you want quiet you need two silencers, especially if you have decatted the car. Two silencers costs more - thats the way life goes.

If you want the best performing quiet system the extra £70 is worth it.

I've always found Magnex to be pretty quiet.
  16. #16
but they dont get the best power from what people say
  17. #17
my housemate had a magnex and it was pretty loud, however hes now got a piper and its even louder, now im just contradicting my self from what i wrote earlier lol but hes got a different tail pipe design than mine guessing that make as difference as we both have cammed 16v's with a 4-2-1 and a s/s center section the back box is the only differece except that his is a 3.5 outward rollled and mine is a 3" inward rolled

    Perhaps he turned his on!

Also check, you may be deaf!

The 8v will be quieter though simply as the OP's car does not rev as high..

Jeff, you car sounds quite nice acutally, not too loud.

Suppose when it comes to it, I'll get a silencer, does this lower performance though?
