small engine saxo owners help

there are probably threads like this about already and i have had a search for them and cant find anything like this...
do you own a small engine saxo,106,ax or such like? struggling with insurance and modifying to make your car faster but for the insurance is almost a no no?? ok well this should help you a little bit and stay well within the law... its no massive power gains in any of this, but if you add up all the little bits then you might have just found something...

ok first things first, you have a 1.1 saxo lets say and your mates got a 1.4 206 and you cant keep with him in a straight line... your taking him on on the wrong terms to start with he should always win he has a bigger engine, more pwoer and torque, however take him on on your terms, youve got a potentally road going go kart...

right down to business, you dont wanna void your insurance but more of a level playing field,

give your car a bloody good service, good quality oil, oil filter, new clean air filter (doesnt have to be k+n or anything special), decent spark plugs (ngk, bosch), leads and a cambelt (gates) and a water pump whilst your there. one all of this will help your car be more reliable and secondly it will bring the engine timing back to what it should be, the plugs will burn the petrol better and more efficiently giving a bigger bang and a slight more power. the oil and filter is to lube the engine as and engine with good oil will spin quicker than one with old tired carboned up oil in. the water pump and a coolant change will keep the engine running at an optimum temperature and help the fuel burn more ferociously in the bore.

nextly when your bored one weekend polish the throttle body, get out all the dirty grime in there, thats all going into your engine, you need some brake cleaner and soft rag to not damage anything, then get polishing, ive always used t-cut as that seems to remove alot of the imperfections from manufacture, dont put too much on though (have seen a few good threads about throttle body cleaning on here) its within your insurance your not modifying it your blueprinting it (returning it to what it was meant to be when it left the factory)

a possibly more expensive next step is tyres, buy the best your budget can take, you dont need michelins or dunlops, avons or yokos are good and are very competitively priced. dont forget whats holding your sorry ass to the black stuff on the road.... thats right the black bits wrapped around your wheels... good quality tyres improve handling, response, braking and accelerating. they are your life line dont scrimp on them. these should change the feel of the car dramatically and you wont ever wanna go back to how it felt before.

finally and as important as the tyres, the brakes. i know allot of us dont wanna buy citroen stuff as its expensive, there are very good other makes out there, unipart stuff in all honestly i love but thats just me, good disks and pads on the front and shoes and wheel cylinders on the rear will improve the stopping power of your car no end and itll be safer. also change the brake fluid for new stuff, comma dot 4 is very cheap and the best stuff ive found so far with hellfords comming in at 2.

try and lighten the car as well, i dont mean take the back seats out but i mean clean all the junk outta the boot all the trainers in there.

now when your mate wants a blat as for sure he will, you wont be as back in a straight line and round the corner youll be infront for sure!!

i hope this helps some people out all is not lost, alot of us were in your position once, but we all forget that..

    p.s

Ignoring the fact that the suspension is stupidly soft and you'll wallow into bends. My 1.1 mounted so many kerbs it was paying CSA

Theres very little point trying to make a 1.1 quicker. I tried, then bought the vtr.

I race for pinks, i polished my 1.1's throttle body now 1.9 golfs i pass with ease.

For a start a 1.9 golf is easy as its a diesel... I drive a 1.9d polo and a 1.1 saxo is quicker in a straight line, yes the suspension is soft but there are things you can do to help the overall badness of it...

    So basically a service?

That won't make the car noticeably quicker at all. Especially not like its gained 300cc.

Could've saved the effort and said "Want to beat your mates slow as shit 206? Buy a car with a bigger engine!" Would've been better advice if I'm honest.

What a strange thread...It's pretty much as said though, doing what you recommend (which is basicly a decent service lets face it) Will definitely benefit the car in more ways than one, but its just not going to make any major difference to the performance, not enough to be able to keep up with a car that you couldn't before anyway.

I wouldnt buy a 1.1 to try and make it faster when almost every other car out there would do a better job of it.
Surely you would buy a 1.1 because its cheap, cheapest on insurance and cheapest to run. If you buy a 1.1, you might aswell forget about 'racing' and trying to keep up with people who have more powerful cars.
If thats really what you want to do, buy a more powerful car.

If you HAVE to modify a 1.1, then leave the engine alone and fit better brakes, suspension components and tyres

it was more aimed towards people that cant afford the insurance after theyve modified it, and wanna stay within the law, like first time drivers or insurers...

I would defy most people to tell the difference looking at a 1.1 8v and a 1.4 alloy block 8v--but the performance difference is very noticable --so just fit a 1360 engine and the insurance man will never know
