inlet upgrade? help

  1. #1
    hi , my sax is a 1999 westcoast ( 1.4 ) and i have a mate breaking a 1999 vtr (1.6 )
i am wanting to upgrade to the vtr's inlet manifold by swapping over , my question is , is it easy ? , will it all fit together? , and what will i loose and gain? , and will it be a noticeable difference? , because i read a thread a while ago now and it says you get more pull in 2nd and 3rd for overtaking ?
  2. #2
its debatable if youll gain without a map

but it will fit and run easy as pie

its a bigger inlet and TB so should give something if very small
  3. #3
what do you mean without a map ? couldent i just take it off the vtr ?
  4. #4
    straight swap very easy.

i think he means without re programming the ecu to tell it you have a bigger inlet =- more air = more bang then the gains you will notice will be very slight.
  5. #5
i proper want to go through with it and it wont be a problem getting the parts , i could even get the vtr ecu if it is single pin , witch i think mine is but ive had a look at his and his is smaller would that matter ?
  6. #6
being a westcoast it will be a single plug but i wouldnt fit the vtr ecu though
  7. #7
    what now lmao
  8. #8
you said "i could even get the vtr ecu if it is single pin , witch i think mine is" and im saying yes yours will be a single plug as well as its a westcaost, all westcoasts are mk1's and all mk1's use single plug ecus, but i would advise not to use the vtr ecu

yeah the single plug would run the vts single plug..plug

vtr one wouldnt fit..skinnier and longer iirc
  10. #10
right , the ecu's out of it then so would it be worth a go ?
  11. #11
i personally wouldnt bother you wont notice any difference, if you were fitting a different cam then maybe id give it a go but then id rather just fit the s1 rallye inlet purely for its looks/sound

but then it all leads around to the same argument i wouldnt bothering camming an 8v or fitting the rallye inlet id just go 16v
  12. #12
if its free or really cheap i cant see why not lol

if nothing else you may see some induction noise

i wouldnt bother camming an 8v tbh

if keeping an 8v though...rallye inlet is worth it for looks and noise

very true, i wouldnt cam a vtr but i could see the attraction of fitting the 1.3 rallye engine or one of the xsi engines if i was intent on staying 8v and wanting to do an engine swap

however i do think it should be made a crime to 16v anymore s1 rallyes lol

adds a bit of porn factor to a dull 8v bay

cant argue with that..i really wanted to transfer into one...but what ppl think a decent nick rallye is worth these days is beyond me tbh

i will get one eventually, but probs be a clean empty shell..as much as i love them..rot boxes arent worth that much

only the high spec ones are decent these days..and they come with more then i need and a hefty tag

they certainly do hold their value well, as were on the subject my housemate has a 16v'd xsi which used to be a 1.6 8v which are rarer than any rallye

id quite happily 16v a s2 rallye (as i dont think they are anything special) just looking at one on the bay atm, would love to just put my engine/suspension/brakes in to it and have some fun on track... whack the rallye engine in my vtr and sell it on, i will never take the red sax on track such a shame having that engine though but also sayign that i could never sell my red saxo either so pointless me mentioning it lol

boosting is the only thing 8v's are good for , another one of my ideas is to sell the bodied engine and build up a 8v turbo, for the money ive paid to havea 16v 155bhp engine i could of had a more powerful boosted 8v

should do a poll on whats a better looking inlet excuse the catch tank and mild steel mani lol
  19. #19
    go for it mate
im sure you've been in a few quick saxo and 106's..maybes never and 8v turbo though? id say youve probs been in a 16v turbo

you've got an ecu already...so that's the main cost out the way

once youve factored a clutch and management, everything else is pretty cheap!!

defo worth it, put simply my car as is/was (need a new turbo and map as mine is smoking and the map was for old c/r) quicker then some PRETTY expensive cars

you may have seen all the issues ive had as of late..was still enough for me to go back, and since then ive broke down..done a turbo and had a puncture (we're talking a week)

but its all just daft things tbh, cant wait to pick my new turbo up and get mapped for the spec, drive it as i used to

Blackie - how far into the turbo have you gone? An expensive job or cheap as possible? Are you using standalone or MF2 / Sigcon ?
  21. #21
As for VTR inlet, if you don't lose anything and its a direct replacement id try it

It owes me some pennies, It was originally a budget boost but I wanted it to look fair and be as reliable ad poss, I bought near enough complete decent kit

    Bought all new pipes
    New water feed and returns
I got the clutch re plated do it was nice and new
All new service parts eg belts an gaskets and oils filters bolts etc etc
It's had two new cambelts in last year
New decomp etc but now running double mls
    New predator
Lots of other new odds and ends etc

When I got the car about 5k before I fitted turbo it got new wishbones, new spax susp and rebuilt the struts with new top bearing and wheel bearings, new drop lonks x2sets, fitted the brembos with new discs and pads all round and new braided lines, since then it's also had a recon beam

The list is endless mate but vast majority of it I bought new

if you was to put a rallye inlet on a 1.4 wouldn't it be beneficial and make a better gain in bhp to fit the 1.3 rallye head, inlet and ecu?

ive heard that with the setup ive mentioned above the 1.4 would run 100bhp?
