Strange noise...

  1. #1
Comming home today and the drivers side started to make a graunchin noise when i let the throttle off, once i pressed throttle back down about 5-10% it went away...

also theres a constant noise from that side of the car now, gets louder over time and seems worse at higher speeds...

thinking its a wheel bearing but wanted to check before i order one!

Alternator belt would be first to check

checked that and its fine, sounds like suspension, driveshaft, wheel bearing, checked the massive centre bolt on hub and its warm / hot other one is cold.

Probably a bearing if there's excess heat in the hub

Jack the side of the car up, put your hands on each side of the wheel, and if there is play then the wheel bearing has gone

cool thanks for that, if its not the bearing any other ideas?

Also forgot to mention, try to look closely inside the strut at the shock when checking the wheel bearing, if the shock has play, you should see it wobble as you test the wheel for play, if the shock stays still, it will definately be the bearing

Might it be driveshaft? I had a funny noise coming for driver side months ago changed the driveshaft and stopped the noise

this, i had same problem. theres play in the shaft, when you release the throttle.

If it was the driveshaft, it would be making a knocking noise when turning, a grinding noise when accelerating will probably be a wheel bearing

Hold the wheel at the top and bottom not the sides

well i took her to bits to change wheel bearing and the drive shaft is in a bad way. no noise when accelerating tho just when you back off the throttle, either way its naffed so new one on way and changing wheel bearing while im at it! bit of a pig to strip it down but only took an hour!

if you need a tapered driveshaft let me know

theyre easy to swop over BTW the hardest bit i find (if drivers side) is the intermediate bearing nuts as my hands arent as flexible as they used to be lol
