GUIDE: Slimline fan conversion

  1. #1
This is a little how-to on doing a single fan conversion.

    The fan i bought...

    http://www.txautosport.co.uk/12-slim...-fan-154-p.asp

depending on the size of your radiator.. will be different sizes required.

    lets begin..

Right.. bumper off just enough for access!

Now, on your fan unit there will be a JB (junction box) holding 2 relays, on my fan, there was 2 screws (1 each side) undo them, and take the caps off, you will see this.

These just lightly twist out, (remember to pull the relays off first! and mark where they were! there is numbers on the plugs and relay, but you wouldnt want to chance it incase, so i etched mine with a screwdriver. on the top of the plug, the relay, i knew what was the top as it had inprints of bosch.

Next thing to do... Cut the wires going to your origonal fan, there should be 2 wires, 1 which is an earth, 1 which is a positive (dont cut it silly ammount, like right on the base of the fan unit! as you will only get yourself in to trouble if you cant get your fan to work atall!

Strip the 2 wires you just cut, generously.

Right... Now its time to mount your fan, and prepare it for being connected, these are held on by tie-wraps, you will have to tie it round the fins on the radiator, thats fine, dont be too hard on it though! as they are brittle, if you do go straight through the fin, it wouldnt really be a massive fault, as the fins are just there to help aid the flow of air to cool it.

Next up... get your choch-block, i used one from my days of marine engineering, these are useful although afterwards i will be going out and buying a bigger junction box for ALL these wires to sit in, so it will be waterproof, or i will tape them up, either or works, On automotives if i remember correctly - black is a positive, not a negitive as if it were your house wiring, and blue is normally always a negitive.

Now that that is on... turn the car on, and wait for it to get to temp, remember if your car was cold, it will hit its max temp, open the thermostat, thus bringing the water temp down again which means a big wait... you then will have the fan come on at usually, mine came on like this... however, it was pulling the air, not pushing it.

To overcome this, you can remove the fan, and turn the fanblades the opposite way, OR you can reverse the polarity - if you do not know what this means... means switch the wires round! I however switched my blades round the opposite way...

    Finished product!

Enjoy, hope its useful to anyone.

dont forget to dis connect your battery before doing anything

i used the mounting blocks to mount mine to the car

there are a few holes on the upper slam panel to connect the cable ties into the blocks

and can either go all the way round the lower like i did..or drill two more either side to take the cable ties through

as i didnt want mine to go through the rad..either or is fine

i also wired mine diff but that's because im using a hybrid of looms/engine/ecu/chassis wiring lol

Yes that! ahha dont forget to disconect battery xD and never leave the fan with power when your working on it as it CAN trip and turn itself on - bye bye fingers lol

Where did you hide your blocks?? in the slam pannel? - i might try this...

Ive only done this to get my intercooler in, and thank fuck i dont need to cut any of the bumper, and the intercooler fits in fine (and its one i was using on a stage 2 cupra which i had to cut that bumper to fuck) lol

my blocks arent hidden mate..its just because of the way ive mounted it..i had plenty of room for my i/c too.which is thicker then normal at about 4"..however i did have to remove the fog light mounts etc

  5. #5
fog lights were removed when i bought it, so i dont have to take them out lol looks like i can get my intercooler pipes routed into the bay no bother too, think a little bit of straight pipe, then 2 90 degrees's will see me in there, ready for when im to do the conversion

What radiator setup are you using blackie? standard VTS rad?
  6. #6
No mate it's the R rad from very late vtr's mines 03 on a 52)

They changed them to a much better design and made them same size as an s rad

Ahh right, im hoping i can get away with the VTS rad on the CITUNING dp, mani and gt17...

will find out on the weekend when i trial fit everything and sort out my piping so i dont have to fafff about with it when it comes to bolting everything on, just to save time

Going to be fitting one of these to my new project so I get more room behind front bumper.

Just to confirm once the fan is wired in do you re connect the relays back in to there original places ? Or do you leave them out .
