What aftermarket ECU?

  1. #1
Im looking to rebuild my S and go with some boddies, whats the best ECU to go with?

I am going to need a aftermarket one of course, not looking to buy new, will be buying a used one, just after some suggestions.

    Thanks

    What's your budget
  3. #3
If budget isn't an option, I would personally use a predator, but as above it depends what you want to spend
  4. #4
If budget wasn't an option I'd use omex 600

But even second hand your looking at a lot of money
  5. #5
    £300-400 Guys
  6. #6
That might get you an ecu like predator

But then you got mapping on top

    You budgeted that in?
  7. #7
    No bud
  8. #8
You'd be lucky to get a dastek, hard wired and mapped for £300-400 lol

you're stuffed then. You'll need a decent mapping session if youre fitting bodies. What will be the spec of the engine itself when rebuilt?

Ignore the price of the remap, that's not a issue bud.

im not knocking the predator in the slightest, but people seem to hold it in very high regard when infact all it is is a plug and play megasquirt ecu. that said, there is some very good software available to self map the predator, and megasquirt is more than capable for a bodied vts with excellent results

If money is not a problem and omex is your favorite ,then why a 600 and not a 710 --much more spec .
my choice would alwasy be a DTA as it is good value ,simple to set -up and has wide band self mapping capability , at less money than an omex 600
but my adivce has always been to choose the ecu your mapper is most conversaant with .
all can do a good job on a simple t/body set-up
its only when you want to start adding lots of oother devices you wish to control that choice becomes more of an issue and if you change your car and want to move the ecu then extra functions could be handy

My choice was based on my spec and the spec he looks to be using

Of course of money was no object I'm sure I'd choice to spec up my project, but it's was just a general post tbh

I would actually prefer dta if I'm honest, however I know no one in my area who are confident with dta

But several who'll use omex, my actual mapper is am omex stockist so it would be my ecu of choice if I was upgrading which I probs will be come the end of the year

I'm using an Omex 600 without any issues, there post sale service is great! They're always very helpful.

As GMC has said, it's worth speaking to the company who are going to map it to see what they prefer.

if you have a budget of £3-400 then youll be left with very little options, if any at all tbh

even for a 2nd hand DTA/OMEX youre talking £5-600 and then that may not include a pnp loom.

i am just about to go boddies and luckily picked up a cheap 2nd hand pred ECU, many people can map megasquirt so getting it mapped will not be an issue. Fitting it will also not be an issue due to it being pnp for my single plug loom. Acquiring a base map shouldnt be an issue considering many people have these ECUs and some may even share there map to get your car running atleast. Andy is a stones throw away from where i live so getting road mapped shouldnt be an issue either

if on a budget like you say you are i can only see 1 option tbh

i have a predator and got a bit of stick for having one at the garages in been to but once they used it and saw how user friendly it is they changed there mind about it, if i had bought a more exepnsive ecu i would have no more power jsut a more expensiver ecu

i paid £470 for my ecu and £270 for mapping so £740 in total i could ahev probbly got a cheap omex for that so its not exactly a supr cehap option like many people think

Unless you're going to be able to make/convert your own wiring loom, and are capable of mapping it yourself with a wideband - it all adds up pretty quickly. I very much doubt you'll find anything for £3-400 sadly.

use the system your chosen mapper suggests - best bit of advice you will ever get.

dont buy an ecu then try and find a mapper, especially if "low budget" systems are being used, as often you'll struggle to find any professional prepared to touch it.

My mapper wasn't keen on Pred when I told him it was based around mega squirt, hes the only one that would take it on lol

But once he seen it wasnt megatune and that tuner studio is pretty good and easy he was very happy with it

I paid £380 or the ecu.. Bout £120 on looms to get it in my 3 plug (had mine in a year before the 3 plug ecu was ready) and £200 on mapping

northampton motorsport are happy enough to map the preadtor, i was the first they did iirc, they are a very professional place, they do charge £108 per hour to map though but they are good at what they do! could eat your dinner off their workshop floors

They are top guys, mapped 3 of the megasquirts I've installed now,

Also so far, not one has had to pay for all the time they actually had,
Real world figures also not massively inflated ego massaging figures lol.

    I recommend them massively.

I'm running kms as it came with the car. There are loads of second hand ecu's for 3-400 quid, I bought willsys old hydra for 350 and sold it for the same.

    Just look around.

Something that allows launch control/multiple maps on a switch because its cool as f*ck!
