Petrol gauge boucing?

  1. #1
Right so I have half a tank of fuel in my car. Driving down the road looked at my petrol gauge, to realise it dropped to quater tank, then below red, then bouncing back and forth. Then it goes back to normal, done it for 3 days now. Any advice on what I should do, go to a garage, or if I can do it myself?

Could be the resistor on the back of the clocks mate could also be the sender unit giving a incorrect reading.

Have had this before and it was my sender unit, but on a separate occasion its been an earth problem.

I need some help with my petrol gauge as well. Yesterday after topping it up with petrol i noticed that the gauge went way off the maximum mark and when i turn the car off the gauge doesnt stop at the minimum like it used to.

When i switch off the car

And a video showing what it does when i switch on and off the ignition

check the earth in the passenger footwell next to the bonnet realese you will have to undo a 10mm plastic bolt and pull the carpet back

No harm in unplugging battery either for 1/2 an hour.

Right ok so the problem has come back and it seems when I hit the dashboard just above the gauge it seems to go back to normal then bounce again, last time I cleaned it and it stopped but now its back, shall I replace it?
