Throttle body socks

  1. #1
Ive been running my car with no filter for some time now and im not usually one to worry but i think i may see common sense and look at some filtration!

I dont really know where to start looking for socks to go over my jenveys, ive been on the jenvey website and they sell sausage filters but due to lack of space (and probably a poorly designed mainfold) there is so little room behind my trumpets which would render a sausage filter useless imo (before peope say cut the bulk head, i would be more than willing to do this however that isnt the problem! the manifold points the trumpets right at the brake bar so unless i grind through this then its not an option)

Or even a slim plenum maybe and have a conventional style air filter?

most ppl seem to steer away from socks form what ive seen

im sure i once read a post of sandy's saying he's seen more engines die from ingesting socks then stones through running no filter lol

sorryif that wasnt him..but im pretty sure it was??

in my nieve view they just slid over the trumpets but i was told by someone else they attach to a plate which you snadwhich between the throttle body and the trumpet so they dont get sucked in?

not really "up" on the knowledge of them tbh mate, ive only ever seen ppl cable tie them on haha, just remember reading something along those lines a while back on moaners

sure it was a debate about running/not running a filter/socks

and most said theyd prefer to run no filter then socks due to them often being ingested or tearing and parts of the sock being ingested, etc

this then moved to stones and how unsafe no filter was, which im sure several mentioned only every seeing stones kill an engine on forward facing inlets...eg clio and such

which then moved to ppl stating theyd had stones go through a sausage filter/socks and killing an engine on engines with those bodies...so would have made no diff not to run one etc lol

im sure ryan and some others will have alot more valuable input tbf, so ill wait for them, i just remember that thread as it was quite a good debate

EDIT- obviously some filtration of some sort should be healthier..but i dont recall anyone saying theyd suffered any notable damage they could blame on running no filter (other then eating a stone fo course)...apart from gritty oil when changing it..which obviously cant be too healthy anyway lmao

I'd rather protect the engine with some socks. Use ones that go over two trumpets rather than tiny individual ones.

Its not really stones that will kill the engine, but particles of dirt that rapidly reduce engine life.

do you have an idea of where i can buy these from? do i buy universal ones? and do you have any idea on how socks actually do attach to the tb's? i really have no clue when it comes to socks lol

ideally there should be no obstruction closer than the dia of the bell of the trumpet .
however if you can fit a foam plenim that would leave around 20-25mm from end of trumpet to filter I doubt there would be any noticable performance drop .
the problem with socks is they move and if sucked hard to turmpet end then the filter area in use is only that of the trumpet dia .
better to have the filter away from the trumpet even if its really closer than it should be .
can you not fit shorter trumpets to give you some more space ?
the other answer is to use a plenim + remote filer unit .
It is for the reasons you have found that the GMC/ATP boides are the length they are --to allow use of a proper foam filter unit .
