1.5D into vts shell?

  1. #1
Know this sounds stupid, a diesel in a vts?!

Really, want to know if the engine mounts into standard mounting points for the vts etc, presuming it does?

Looking to do this after stripping my saxo bear, buy a 1.5D with a rotten shell for like £300 then transfer it all into my vts shell for a great daily mpg machine!

As my shell is mint and really think it would be a waste considering the fact it has virtually no rust..

i reckon you will have trouble with the ecu mount but apart from that should be fine if you have a welder it will be do able

Is it worth it for an extra 20mpg over the VTS? be easier to strip it out to keep the weight down, thus saving fuel

A VTS on the books averages 33 MPG, when bassicly all of them are modified, youll be lucky to see 25mjpg out of that

A solid deisel on the book says it will do 54 mpg - and with an engine that dosent need much maintance, stronger out the box, and if you wedge a 1.1 box on it to lower ratio's - you'll defo see a little more than that

Thing is, i dont want to be tempted to go fast, diesel will help that, and also get me shitloads more in my wallet over-time for when its needed, taxing aswell - what are diesels to tax a year? the 206 diesel is £30 a year on tax, pretty much what the saxo will be about id reckon, insurance too will be pretty cheap

is it going to be cheaper after declaring this mod to a standard VTS? Depends on how old you are I suppose. I think it'd be cheaper to sell your shell to someone who needs one and buy a decent 1.5D. I'd imagine there would be more good ones of those around, as driven by pensioners who only pop to the shops and back once in a blue moon.

Yes the engine will fit though the diesel has a few differences as in things like fuel pickup in the tank and so on. I dont know them all but don't expect a direct fit there will be a few more things you will have to sort. Wiring may be a problem as well as the Saxo did change a lot over the years. I got better fuel economy from my late 1.1 injection then i ever did from my diesel. But then i did thrash the diesel to get it to move unlike the 1.1 i just putted about in. The 1.1 petrol was a LOT faster so you did not have to try. These where both 106s and not Saxos but the same car really. The diesel fitted to these are really old hat and rather pants to say the least. also agree with Gandi699 engine swaps are never a cheap way to go. If you really do wish to have a diesel that looks like a VT your best getting the diesel and just swapping some of the kit over.

Lowering the gearing will more then likely harm economy not improve. The diesels in my experience are also not as strong as the petrol. There basically the same engine as the petrol but runs much higher compression so the head gaskets don't last as long for starters.

a popular misconception that diesels don,t need TLC.
how many fo you diesel men have ever reshimmed the valves (tappet clearance) or timed up the pump correctly and made sure its not over fuelling
I have sold loads of axb + saxo diesels when we were a dealer and you should be getting alot more than 55mpg
one of my godd lady,s daughters has one and its averaging 68mpg --and thats a bit of a nail

Oil and filters more often, decent fuel every so often and common cambelts...

Im my 1.9d polo i get 50mpg to work and back (flat out usually because i dont wanna be late...) best ive recorded was 88mpg on a run up to chester :-)

The saxo diesel is not as modern as the 206 hdi you mention. The 1.5d saxos are £120 or £135 a year to tax, depending on age.

Im not bothered about the hassle lol

Its more of a fun project, ive got a great shell here, can pick up a rotten shelled 1.5D for a few hundred, and would be a project for pissing about with, im not sure what im going to do with the shell, might store it away and build it up overtime as a track car or diesel it

God knows, ill decide once everythings out lol
