Reving itself and odd idle

  1. #1
As title, on a 1.1 spi so a black top engine. Started today, had problems with idling before and tried everything under the sun! Reset the ecu today and worked fine for two minutes, so that seems electrical right? Just want to know what people suggest trying first? Stepper motor maybe?

    ICV valve perhaps

sound like ecu mate if its revving its self up ...

Iv had the same problem before and these were the things i checked

    vacume leak

    Map sensor

    both lambda sensors

    crank sensor

    Idle controll valve

turned out it was a new ecu i needed but id check all the above first

generally symptoms start after a minute or so of running if that helps anyone narrow it down? Also no icv on old 1.1 blacktops, all off stepper motor.

Have you changed the relay under the ecu at any point?

Edit- after a minute of running all the time? Or just when hot/cold?
  6. #6
what do you mean by odd idling? all over the place? dropping from high to low?
  7. #7
In answer to the relay, no, never knew it existed!

As for the odd idling, I mean sticking, for lack of a better word at say 1.5 to 2k revs, was driving without even touching the accelerator! It normally sticks at a higher rpm when cold and a lower, say 500 rpm when its warmed right up. Eventually it sorts itself out, or near enough after a good 5 miles or so.

As for the timing of it reving itself its generally ok for the first 30 seconds to a minute then plays up, whether hot or cold start. Its then replaced by the rpm sticking!

Oh and cheers for the reply lads, anything that narrows it down is epic! Had idling issues last winter. Tried the stepper, battery, checked tappets, did fuel filter, coolant temp sensor, knock sensor, air temp sensor, reset the ecu and injector cleaner. But in the end it seemed just improve and become less frequent until it just went away, after i'd given up on trying to fix it!

relay and stepper motor replaced with no joy. Any other suggestions?

Could try lambda if it varys on engine temp

if it was the lambda wouldnt the fuel economy be aweful? Its ok at the moment.

So your lambda is dodgy and your fuel consumption is still ok?
