Oil return on 16V head.... PROBLEM

  1. #1
Bit of a curious issue, got the car fully on the road today.

And all good, managed to do some mapping and getting it running nicely..

Gotta admit open throttle bodies and an un baffled exhaust sounds pretty sick lol

    anyway...
when i got back from an hour out, i pulled away from a junction with a little vigour wheels a spinning and suddenly smelt the dreaded hot oil smell, car still drove fine, didnt feel like id broke anything, just a stick of hot oil

pulled into driveway, got out to find oil on the floor and immediately thought OH SHIT

popped hood to find the oil return pipe had blown out of the hole on the side of the head ?

    so questions
    why would this blow out?
im monitoring oil pressure, hits 4.5 to 5bar at 7000 rpm's, 1 to 1.5 at idle of 1200 rpm

return pipe is bolted solid, just the fitting is loose as owt... just flops out?

so idea... start a fresh and fit new pipe fittings 1/2" NPT to tap head then run a new braided return line and fit that to return pipe

    another quickie.....
I've used one of the cam oil galley ports for oil pressure, is the other seeing the same oil movement for oil temp?

might sound like a silly question....but what oil return...where are your returning the oil too?

runs from the head to the block down by dipstick

    isnt that just a breather?

The little "N" shaped pipe? It sounds like a breathing problem if it just blew out. Has it been forced out, ripping the thread out with it? or has it just come off.
If it has been forced out, make sure that all your breathers are clear and haven't been blocked or even blocked off accidentally.

all i know is alot of oil came out in one go lol and it returns via the pipe to the block

    this was why i asked

when you said return i instantly thought of the "feed" ppl use to take the oil feed for turbos as im sure you had a thread on a it leaking form there not long back?

defo sounds like a breathing issue

    It's this pipe

not sure where it can get more breath lol cam covers are now the new type with individual breathers...

sounds like the oil drain from the head to the sump. they are not the best "push in" fitments. try a new one from dealers as they wear easily. if not bond/glue it back in but dont block it off!

As above, if it's the breather pipe I'm thinking of, it's just a push in fitment into the side of the head and the seal holding it in place can wear away quite quickly, I've had problems with it in the past and eventually had to re-seal it using strong glue

If its the one I am thinking of then it is an easy fix

you see this going from the side of the head and then back down to the sump? you see the metal part at the front when off looks like the below

the metal part usually gets clogged up with shit and cause pressure build up take this off clean it out with brake and clutch cleaner then refit make sure the part that goes back in the head at the back you put a bead of silicone around it as they are only push fit as standard and are prone to leak.

The part you have pictured come out all the time again small bead of silicone will sort it

How come it can't be blocked off ? Will the oil not return to the sump via the internal journals
