BHP difference between mk1 VTR and mk2 VTR

  1. #1
    Hello all

I've noticed that the mk1 vtr is 90bhp and the mk2 vtr is 100bhp on standard form.
What has been done to the mk2 to result in an increase of 10bhp?
The mk2 also seems to have better mpg that the mk1.

    Thanks

    Search button & stickies!!!

    Its not mk1 / mk2, its pre & post 2001 and its 90 / 98 bhp!

Its a mk3 and there are loads of diffrrences threads about but in short
    Tighter emission stds
Better map from a 3 plug ecu
Cat in the front rather than underneath
    Higher comp head
    Differebt airbox and induction system
    Different head porting
    Exhaust manifold higher flow
    Roller rockers

    ....

    Yeah a fair bit

Mk1 is the black top mk2 is the single plug silver top mk3 silver top 3 plug

Never seen one of those before, urs a crossover ? Single plug ecu ? All the crossovers I have seen have been black top 90bhp no roller rocker in a mk2 shel

yep deffo , also its got the coilpack at the back of the engine cat underfloor roller rockers and the dipstick is on the right side of manifold thats how i no it the 90bhp engine

Why are people posting complete garbage when there's a perfectly good sticky in the frequently asked questions??

No the black top was not the only 90bhp engine.

Basically the silvertop single plug was the worst of everything

    Not really.

As a daily driver the hydraulic tappers were better than the mechanical ones, and for those wanting to decat cheaply not having to faffing with the manifold was a big bonus.

But you got the easy decat options with a black top?
Plus with a black top you dont need to run a fuel return if you ever go 16v
Screw roller rockers with their associated soft shit springs too! haha

The 98bhp engine has less parts for tuning (eg wrong port spacing for the s1inlet) the manifold is a pain in the arse etc...

Plus the 3plug ecu is a pain in the arse.

I suppose with a single plug ecu'd silvertop, you can chuck an black top in easily enough if you so wish and the inlet/manifold etc will still fit.
3 plug is a different kettle of fish altogether, definitely wouldn't want one of those

right, so I don't get Ross's reference to Hydraulic tappets, as no 8 valve TU has them.
  26. #26
98bhp ones take boost easier imo
