My gearstick is all floppy?

Hi any help would be appreciated. I am new on here but would be grateful for any suggestions anyone has. My car was fine this evening until I stopped at lights and when I went to move off again the gearstick is just flopping around all over the place. I seem to have gears and I can kind of get into gear although I have no idea what gear i'm in. I assume its some kind of linkage thats failed. If so what is it and is it expensive? Thank you! Cheryl ;-)

Might be the rubber ball that connects to the gear selector, came off mine, went sloppy as hell but could still get into gear, if you manage to find the ball, i wouldnt suggest putting back on unless you got somthing like tiger seal, probs best to just buy a new one, there about £46 new from citroen but a breakers will sort you out for £20

    They look like this...

And you'll be missing the rubber ball at the top.

Does it bang when you move the gear stick?

Search is your friend with this one.

    Common problems are:-

    Gear box roll pin
    Gear linkages
    Gear selector arm boll worn
    Gear linkage bushes.

Replace in that order as that's the cheapest way to go and should solve the problem. But there is always the chance that the problem could be inside the gearbox.

Can you select all gears still? Could be simply the selector ball or a linkage popped off. Only buy new parts on linkages as second hand are false economy.

Hi, thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I have no idea what it looks like. I will get under the car in the morning and see what I can see but hopefully its nothing more major than that. Thank you again. Will let you know x

If you can imagine sitting in the drivers seat, its pretty much attached to the footwell, but obviously in the engine bay... best pic i could find is this,

The long pole with the ()_) on the end of it, thats where the rubber ball goes

Thank you all for your suggestions. Jst spoke to my mechanic and he seems of the opinion that its the rubber ball thing too. He said gearboxes rarely go on saxo's. Here's hoping lol. Thank you again x

gearboxes go just as much as any other car, its the luck of the draw

    heres the guide

dont buy a 2nd hand selector arm as said ^ it'll probs be just as worn

i changed mine as it was worn, didnt really make a difference. The biggest difference was the 30p gearbox roll pin and a drilled out washer as a spacer

    Hi,
It was the roll pin for the gear linkage. All back to normal now.
Thank you for all you advice!
