MK2 VTR Sports Cat

  1. #1
    Hi,

I've just got a MK2 VTR, and got a Group N backbox w/ straight through centre section today, the only thing its missing now is a Manifold, i ran decat on my old car but not worth the hassle now a days, but love the rasp/pops of decat, would you get the same sorta noise with a 4-2-1 mani and get a sport cat welded in my middle section? means its safe for roadside checks etc and dont have to faff around for MOT time.

    Any ideas? thanks

I ran a sports cat on my old system, with only the back box as a silencer and it popped and banged all day - drove me fucking nuts lol.

    Passed an MOT though.

    about that! :')

the sports cat silences alot. Going from a 4/2/1 supersprint to 4/1 sports cat, supersprint back box im at least 10db quieter. I dont get many pops either in comparison.

the decat is worth while. they sound much better for it.

What system did you have fella?

i was thinking of geting a 4-2-1 manifold and get a mk1 centre section and get the cat cut out and weld a sports cat in its place; would that work? ive heard sports cats still pop and bang.. well ive read that from a google search; are the lamda sensors etc the same? i ran decat on my corsa and sounded epic it banged when changing from 1-2 and 2-3, i miss the sound but driving a saxo and going places like lakeside.. im bound to get pulled and knowing my luck get caught out!

a centre silencer is cheaper and wont rob power..

what do u mean buddy? centre cat or what?

Your cat is a restriction in the system. Its a series of small holes the gases are forced to go through. A sports cat will have less but still potentially will have an effect on power.
If you are trying to kill the noise level then get a centre straight through silencer which will have virtually no effect on power.
Personally I would keep a standard cat for MOT time and swap straight after for 364 days of the year.

No no i want the decat noise/rasp; not to kill it.. but running decat is bait with roadside vosa checks etc, do sport cats sound any different to normal cats?

they aren going to take your car apart at the side of the road.
tell them it has a cat...? saxsport has a dummy cat.

we are arguing semantics of wording. The silencer is a better option for power and is cheaper. A straight through design not going to stop pops and bangs but will drop the noise by 10-12db

You may not get the same noise with a sports cat. It affects the sound waves as they have to negotiate a lot of small holes

As for VOSA - when have you ever seen VOSA doing significant roadside checks? For piece of mind go for a sports cat but other than being road legal it will never be better.

Seen VOSA in my small hometown 5 times this year.

Easily solved though.. as they're always on the same road / place. And plenty of alternative routes around it

VOSA are around alot where i live, especially when we go cruises like Lakeside and MCE, might go saxsport with dummy cat tbh
