Broken down...

    Hey all
Sat in the car broken down waiting on recovery,

Driving along last night the car started to suddenly misfire heavily under throttle but rev freely when not under load, over about half a mile it got progressively worse and now it just won't start at all,

I have no EML on or anything and was thinking perhaps cool pack, any input?

    Thanks

    got fuel?!
  3. #3
3/4 a tank though symptoms were like starvation to start with, checked engine bay fuses and all looked good, last time a saxo did this the fuel pump died when i parked it, easy fix so engine fuses were first thing checked, then checked fuel cut off switch, checked coilpack was plugged in right, all the basic stuff really

Coil pack is a favourite. usually only one coil fails though and it runs on 2 cylinders.

Could be the map sensor? that would certainly give you varying issues with/without load.

as above, check the usual shit like "is my fuel gauge lying" because nobody wants to admit they've run out of fuel

A lean running condition would certainly give you misfire under load, and running ok off load the misfire is popping in the intake usually as the vapours ignite. if it's severe you can even blow off poorly fitted induction kits!

There's definitely fuel, my last tank returned 48mpg, gauge reads 3/4 and I've done around 110 miles since filling to the top,

It was absolutely fine, though I'm wondering whether 1100 miles since Monday has just finished something off.

When turning over or when driving last night I had no warning lights, I thought the coilpack would have thrown the EML up, as would a MAP sensor?

It just turns over quickly and doesn't even make any effort to fire, does seem odd for the coilpack to totally go, I've driven them with faulty ones for miles before now

I've done 5k in the 2 months I've owned it and it really hasn't even showed a slight hint of anything, past experience tells me the coilpack usually gives a little warning but I may be wrong..

Always did turn over a couple too many times before starting in the cold for my liking though

I've checked all again this morning and still just turns over and over also

i had a crank sensor fail threw up an issue like this

    Take out a spark plug

if it's wet and stinks of fuel that would surely mean a coil pack?

Oh, never thought about the fuel pump :o

I'm sat in the car and have no tools here but yeah later on ill do that with a plug and see if the outcome helps

The pump isn't priming or making a noise now but then I've been trying to start it a lot so will leave a while and see

It should run when you put the ignition on though even after leaving it a few mins should be enough for it to re-prime.
  11. #11
I'm impatient it's probably been tried every couple of mins gaha I'm sure it was priming last night though
  12. #12
not much you can check without tools if its a late 8v or any 16v.

you need to check for spark.
  13. #13
Yeah, recovery are here and his diagnostics won't read the car so I've just asked him to take me and it home, it is a late VTR though, 03 with 98k, hopefully coilpack time
  14. #14
His diagnostics won't read a 3plug car? (Hopefully you mean he can't find a code?)

even my cheap ebay bluetooth reader can do that, maybe your ecu has buggered up? O_O_
  15. #15
Nah it says can't read or something, possible ecu I guess, he's gone now and I'm waiting for another damn truck!

One truck to read the code looooool then one to tow it away, what a bunch of knobs eh.

Not impressed, it's pretty cold in here!

does the key symbol, on the dash go out?
  19. #19
Yeah that all goes out mate
  20. #20
Got it home, got a spark, took the fuel plug thing off the fuel rail and nothing comes out when ignition is on or turning over... Fuel pump?
  21. #21
Can you hear the pump prime when you turn the ignition?

Pull the back bench up so as to not drown out the noise.
  22. #22
Nothing at all coming from there, not once - No fuel coming from the line in the bay with ignition on, every single fuse on the whole car is fine also

Coilpack gives a spark from all 4 points and gives a shock from both ends too lol

    Cheers

check the inertia switch, check if you have power to the pump, may need to crank it to find this.
  24. #24
Switch seems reset just fine and it's plugged in well etc

Just broke my volt meter so will pick my other one up later / tomorrow and look further then but it is looking like this is the fault,

    Thanks so far everyone

In that case if inertia switch is fine then pump sounds to have died.

    Easy fix

Broken down cars suck balls!! The misses Megane did this exact same thing last week ended up being a coil.
  27. #27
Ah mines not coil related its defo fuel, been offered a couple of pumps on here but as I need the car New Year's Day I'm gonna try get one locally Monday morning, 10 mins and bam!

Hope that's the problem now, I'm already spending rent money as it is haha
