VTR gearbox, VTS Engine?

  1. #1
Am I right In thinking the VTR gearbox has longer gears than the VTS, as the VTS box is more geared for acceleration? So if you put a VTR box on a VTS engine would you have a higher top speed, at a loss of some acceleration?
  2. #2
I'm pretty sure that would be the case

Not really worth it unless you do a lot of motorway miles and are looking for better fuel economy. Not many places to get to "the top speed" And I personally wouldn't want to in a saxo.

Also I have driven a vts on a R box and the box was way too long the car felt sluggish.

VTR box has the same ratios as the diesel.

except from first and second gear.

It'll make the car painfully slow

As said, its a massive down grade on a normal VTS

I get it'd be a step down from a VTS but it would still be quicker than a VTR as its the same ratios just coupled to a quicker engine?

I'm planning on putting a 1.1 box on my 16v conversion but as the VTR box I have is tip too was just weighing up the pros and cons

Naturally yes, it would still be faster than a VTR.

power or torque as standard on the 8V never exceeds that of the 16V at any point.

I had 1.4 furio box on my vts for 6 months, was great but vts box is such a difference.

my mate had a gti with a vtr box, that was still quicker than my vtr but only really once he got into 3rd

my old vts with vts box felt a bit faster than his gti, but i never actually 'road tested' it against a vtr

vtr shares same ratios with a few boxes tbh..its th FD thats different

this is the same for a vts with a vts box, hardly any difference between the two in first and second gear

i have a 1.1 box in my vts...pretty much the same ratio as a vts box and is much better than the vtr box i had, it was horrid!

OP: your assumption re the top speed vs acceleration is correct. On a side note, I have a 1.1 box on my 1.4sx and round town it's great, very point and squirt. On the motorway it's horrid. ~3250rpm for 70mph with a sniper 3 inch back box is loud!

try an s1 rallye box if you want mega rpm at 70!

The car won't be terribly slow at all, I went from a 1.1 box to a vtr box on my vts, felt no difference now I've got a vts box still feel no difference

but the ratio's on the vtr box are longer, 1 & 2nd gear on the vtr box are similer but after that its like a diesel box

Whats the 1.4 box like compared to a vtr box on a vtr?

    Sorry to hijack!

I have a saxo westcoast 1.4 and i changed my gear box but i fear the gearbox i got is a vtr or vts gearbox cause my gear ratio seems all off. How would i kno or is it a problem?

CHeck what RPM it does at what speed and what tyres you run etc
check the code on the gearbox, doesnt mean it hasnt been rebuilt into another casing mind but thats quite rare really

after first and second it is the same ratios as a diesel box in 3rd, 4th and 5th.

the 1.4 gearbox (if it's the same as a 1.4 quicksilver (75PS)) then it has the same gearbox as the 1.5D. the ratios are exactly the same.

    a VTS/GTI gearbox sits about 3250 at 70mph in 5th gear, or 4000rpm at 70 in 4th gear.

    a VTR/1.5D/1.4 sits at about 2900 at 70mph in 5th gear.

Old bump and hijack, but reading through this I'm wondering would putting a VTS box on a VTR make it much quicker accelerating?
  22. #22
I don't think it's night and day in difference but yes it does, but then I went from vtr box to s1 rallye which was obviously majorly different in final drives, then to a vts box in the end

yes it will make it faster to accelerate but at any motorway work, youll be revving alot harder...

p.s i had a vtr box in my vts for 1 track day, boy i couldnt wait to get that fucking thing out, 72MPH in 2nd gear was beyond all help on a 14" wheel...

i think ross worked it out at 77mph in 2nd with 14" wheel 8krpm limit and a vtr box...
