Not starting after gearbox change

  1. #1
Seen many of these threads and checked everything in them

Wanting to tear my fucking hair out!

Before it took a couple of turns to start, and now it wont start at all

Turn the key and the starter motor makes noise but then nothing.

Could be battery, could be crank sensor, could be any earth, could be relay... anyone know specifically as they all seem fine to me!
  2. #2
    earth on?
  3. #3
    Yeah checked them all

As said it did this before but would start after wiggling the starter motor, so im guessing something to do with that

Ive taken it off and cleaned it but nothing

A stuck starter motor is not entirely uncommon. That'll give you just a click on startup but check the earths on it and the power feed

Havent got a multi meter at uni :/

It spun freely with my fingers and sounds like its spinning up but not engaging, which it did before but after a couple of turns of the key it started.

I think it could simply be the battery

Get a jump off a mate. If the solenoid isn't engaging then its a wiring issue, get a photo of the wires

Trying to get a mates battery but ive been pissing people off for 3 months for lifts to work and back haha

Hate not being at home, nobody and uni has cars!

Photo of which wires? The ones going to the starter motor or the earths/sensors?
  8. #8
You got the 3 wires on to the starter motor? One is very flimsy and the terminal snapped which caused this problem for me.
  9. #9
I never disconnected the starter motor from that end so would have to of snapped.

But why did it work before (after a while) and not now, surely if a wire was missing it wouldnt work at all?
  10. #10
Bump start it if it starts doing that then it will be starter if battery is fully charged
  11. #11
Tried bumping but cant get fast enough with just me and my house mate

All 3 wires for the starter motor are on the same thing? But here says they should be separate? http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=368595
My mate must have done it
  12. #12
    Defo the battery

Central locking/windows and everything wont even work now!

    Good news haha
  13. #13
Good you found the problem, but there are two points for wires on the starter. Ones a 10mm but and one a 8mm I think.
  14. #14
Yeah saw took them all off and they were connected correctly

Just realised that its been 10 weeks since its been driven properly apart from about 10 miles to work, and probs been started 10-15 times in that time, so defo adds up to be the battery.

RAC coming tomorrow at 8, dropping me to halfords (where i work) to get my battery swapped
  15. #15
No one at your uni/street have a booster pack to turn it over with?
  16. #16
    Nope

    Batterys working again now :/

Tried a bump start with another mate and nothing!!

RAC coming at 8 tomorrow, im pretty sure its the starter motor, they can test the alternator can they test the starter motor? Or will they will able to tell me the exact problem?

This car is so fucking annoying

RAC just been, battery fine, earths fine, power going to starter motor, fuses fine, she reckons its the grey relay that goes into the fuse box in the engine, but thats just a power steering relay? Or a trapped wire?

The engine isnt even turning over, just nothing!

Weird thing is it started yesterday morning and all i did was the lower mount and linkages

Also, the whirring isnt the starter motor its the power steering pump (could actually here when she turned the key)

Also, when i went to start it yesterday the flasher relay went nuts and was clicking really fast, im guessing this is nothing to do with it?
  18. #18
sounds to me like its not wired up correctly, causing it to not turn which is what usually happens when the wires to the starter are on wrong. I doubt the RAC would spot that either.

The PAS doesnt come on until the engine starts as it runs from the alternator, it'll be the fuel pump you hear whirring
  19. #19
Is the fuel pump in the same area as the PAS pump? As thats defo where the sound is coming from.

We didnt take the wires off the starter motor when changing the gbox, and ive since checked and there are two wires on the 13mm bolt and 1 on the 8mm, which is how it should be?

2 earths go to chassis leg and 1 on top of box..

I had 2 on box and 1 on chassis.. wouldn't start.. the injector relay under the ecu was clicking.

Swapped em over, started 1st time.
Just seen this, mine has got 2 earths on the top of the box!

This could be why, when he says chassis leg, wheres that?

The big cable coming from the starter should got up to the positive terminal on the battery, there should be a cable from the negative terminal that goes to the gearbox and car chassis.
This defo seems to be my problem
  22. #22
    in what way?
  23. #23
Both my earths were on the same position on the gearbox (on top)

Turns out one of them needs to be earthed elsewhere to work
  24. #24
hmm how come you removed that earth from the chassis though?

    SHE LIVES OMG YES!

Moved the earth and it fired up straight away.

Got a car back after 10 weeks! SO happy!

Behind the fuse box on the near side, it's quite a tight fit.

    excellent news!
