Engine change

   i have a Saxo VTR 2002 Mk2 with pretty high millage 127k miles on clock.. i also have another saxo VTR Mk2 2001 with only 80k on the clock...
   
   the question is how easy or fast would it be to life the engine out with the 127k miles on it and plonk my other one with 80k in it?? if its possable ?? thank you.

   I assume both engines are with the 3-plug ECU. It would be very easy if your a compentent DIY mechanic and have an engine crane/hoist. One of the easiest engine swaps there is mate. Could do it in a day easily, but not if your a complete beginner

   yeah it can be done but not if your a beginner mate. Theres a chance the engine could fall off the jack/ fall on you lol. Not worth the risk unless your 100% confident. Also makes life a bitch for getting the replacement engine in . Also are you only changing the engine due to the mileage?

   My vtr is 2001 model and is on 155,000 miles on one engine, its still healthy aswell. I wouldn't panic into fitting an engine with lower miles unless there is an issue with yours, you could be fitting an engine thats actually in worse condition due to lack of oil changes, for example i have seen saxo engines that are burning oil and smoking due to piston rings and valve guide seals at 80-90k miles, where as my engine has had none of this and it's well above that mileage

   No problem. The engines are pretty good to be honest. Its the gearboxes that suffer . Glad i could help mate

   out of cureosity how much are the gearbox??

    well you can pick one up on here for anywhere between £50-100. Or if you go to www.partsgateway.co.uk and they are around £150-160 with 3 months warranty

    Gearboxes can be had for 30 quid if you want a crap cooking model one. Standard sporty boxes are more, add a few hundred for Lsds etc

    yeah, i have a had a fair few in my time....sticking with the 'current' vts box now. I like to have a warranty/comeback with boxes as i have had a few of them where they are noisey/faulty and had to come back out and get exchanged

    Best thing to remember is that the engine does not need to come out through the bonnet. You could lower it to the ground ( the engine that is ) and then lift and push the car back over it. You would need some extra bodies to do this but it is possible, if you do not have an engine hoist. if in doubt K.I.S.S

    for a simple swap like that if you have all the right tools etc could be done in a few hours mate , provided everything goes all well!
    
    did a 16v conversion on mine , used ramp at work and all tools there and took just over 3 hours, did a 16v conversion on a mates car, just with spanners/ratchets/engine crane etc which took about 5 hours

    Personally I'd hire an engine crane. Yes it's not necessary and you can use other ways but boy does it take the hassle out. Even for gear box swaps etc
