Broke down last night...

    Alright guys,

I broke down last night on my way home from liverpool.

Anyway, saxo has spat spark plug number 2 out and the threads gone completely

Anyway i need to get it into the garage, but was looking for what work would need doing and rough prices.

Obviously all garages charge different prices, so you dont need to state that.

Also thought about, if the price is too high, maybe completely replacing the engine or just the top end possibly? with cams maybe? ha

    any help would be appreciated!

    cheers

They'll just tap a new thread or maybe use a helicoil if they're an honest garage. If not they'll try to charge you for a new head amongst other things.

Thread repair shouldn't be more than half an hours work and won't cost much at all.

    Brilliant.

I was told about the Helicoil, but wasnt sure if they needed to remove the head to stop debris getting into the cylinder.

    Thanks for the advice.

see the thread I created on friday in the faults section, covers the same thing

    cheers mate

    i'll have a look

Had my vtr helicoiled but they needed to remove the inlet to get at it, so cost me an extra few hours. At that rate its easier to geta new head

Not the later 3 plug ones it aint... and tbh you need to remove the head to helicoil it properly and swarf dropping in the bore wont do anyone any favours even thought its only ally you dont wanna take that chance... Yes theres a good chance itll just get spat put the exhaust but you wanna take that chance... also if ones gone, normally from over tightening them how far behind are the other 3? Theres a ported head in the for sale section... Might be worth buying that and putting that on... It aint a hard job todo yourself it really aint there are many guides on here to help...

what you want is a "time-sert " fitted --100% better than a helicoil
    http://www.wurth.co.uk/hand-tools1/t...ark-plug-m10x1

my guess would be £30-£40 to get it done
it can be done with head in place --if they sues grease on all the cutting tools then there will be very little swarf in the bore
just crank engine over before fitting spark plug

the issue with helicoil and time-serts is that is insulates the spark plug from the cylinder head, causing it to run hotter. Not an issue on most engines, but I recently found that this was the cause of pre-ignition on a turbo charged engine. The spark plug was getting too hot!!

Mine done the same not long back, cost me £40 for a time sert, left the head on when they done it, had no problems.

Got it done yesterday. Cars running fine now.

Cost me £70 all in, prices for labour are expensive here!!!

He did it with the head on, so all good. Cheers for the help guys!

sod helicoiling it with the head still on.
Im sure you can pick up heads pretty cheap anyway just on their own.

Most back street garages will charge little more than £5 an hour though for labour, shop about and you will find one that does.

I can't find that head in the for sale section.

    Link?

Engineer near mine does helicoiling for around £30 not a hard or expensive job at all.

Aye, prices get cheaper the further north you go it seems.

I live in oxfordshire now and everything is 100% more expensive! p*ss take lol

but its sorted now and the cars running well, so im happy.

I dont beleive the extra 3mm of steel in a time sert would insulate the plug to any great degree
If it did take the plug out then it was so close before it was the wrong grade anyway and as a time sert is a screwed in unit ,not just a wire like the helicoil it will transfer heat alot better than a helicoil and i have never seen a time sert come out after being fitted
wish i could say that about helicoils

I certainly have 1st hand experience of this happening on a heli-coiled cylinder head. We have to run heat grade 10 (from production intent grade 7) plugs to alleviate the problem which disappeared as soon as the head was replaced for a non-repaired one

How does the 3 plug differ? granted the port spacings are different but it shouldnt take that long?

I need to look into this timesert stuff for a mate with a 1.8 focus
