To 16v turbo furio shell or just buy a vts?

  1. #1
Hey just wanted to hear your opinions on this really. Its a bit of a way off yet but im wanting to build a 16v turbo as a weekend maybe track car as i have a van for daily use. I own a furio (51plate) which on the whole isnt a bad shell in all fairness to it. I wouldnt mind using this as a base but if it would make my life easier just to start with a vts? Im not looking to build this mega quickly and would like to learn and do as much as myself really.
I cant imagine its going to be a 350bhp tarmac eater but would love around the 200bhp mark if so is this quite acheivable from a 'home built setup'? i know the professionals will be involved when it comes to mapping etc.
Is there any advice on where to start with a project like this?
Sorry for another turbo thread i am trying to eat my way through reading threads though.

    thanks for your help kc

If your happy with your shell, 16v turbo that because you can use money towards the boost instead of a new car and boost.

I would use your current car if its in good nick, its getting more difficult to find a good VTS these days.

Never built one though, but good luck

I'm in the middle of a 106gti turbo build, and yes you could easily see 200bhp from a charged 16v.

What route are you going down regarding decopression, plate or pistons ? And what's your. Budget ?

I started by removing the engine, then stripping everything down reground the valved, de-coked the head, cleaned everything and assebled with good qaulity oil, forged pistons and shot peened rods with arp bolts, new mains and big end bearings. Just need my block boring out then it will be getting built up

Fitted intercooler and oil cooler all the gauges wired up to the sensors fitted walbro 255 pump.

Doesn't realy matter what order you do everything in just make sure its all done to your best standards and you should be okay, my buid is everywhere at the moment so I have made a 'to do list' which is getting jobs done instead of jumping from one to the other

Your turbo build is whats got me thinking into this alot more than i had done!

From my limited knowledge and research i was thinking decomp plate but am i right in thinking it wont take high boost?? will lower boost achieve 200bhp atw would you know? Budget wise i havent really got an exact figure but id say around £1500-£2000 (which i know is a drop in the ocean for a turbo build) just hoping to save a bit by learning to do things by myself.

Thanks matey, yes you are correct a decomp plate will not take as much boost as a set of forged low comp pistons. I was going to run a decomp plate on my. Furio but some say that 2 head gaskets are better than the plates as they are hard to seal as you use a head gasket on one side and sealent on the other which says everything.

Your budget should make a decent bit of kit but try to buy used good parts or you will go over, here's a small list

    Manifold
    Turbo
    Down pipe
    Intercooler
    Boost pipes
    Standalone ecu/5th injector
    Decompression
Water feed if a water cooled turbo
    2 bar map sensor
Gauges to keep an eye on things
    Possibly bigger injectors
    Uprated clutch
    Oil feed and return
    Dump valve
    Manual/ electronic boost controler
    Oil cooler
    2.5" exhaust

I have probaly missed some stuff aswell, also if you do the work yourself you will learn a load and save a load too

These clutches on ebay that say they are stage 1, 2, 3 etc - don't buy them, price may be cheap but there rated to bhp, it should be rated to torque, as bhp isn't what makes a clutch slip

My setup was cheap, but chearful for anyone wanting to get in the boosted game:

    Milltek mani & downpipe - £300
    Gt17 turbo - 120
    Boost pipes - £60
Intercooler - £free as I have tons of that shit here
    Silicon pieces - free
Dump valve t piece - 10 (however I was gona run without as I like flutter)
    Manual boost controller - 10
    Megane 225 injectors - 65
    Pred ecu - 550
3.5 or a 4 bar fpr - free (find one in a scrappys and pocket it)
    Oil return boss - 10
    Oil feed - 80
    Water feed/return - 30
    1.9mm headgasket and headbolts - 70?

That's the jist, I had a good clutch allready but this was about rough price of my setup

    Cheap, and pretty chearful
