i always thought you could remove the camshaft with the head still attached to the block...... (8v) dont you just jack the engine up & pull it out the side?

You do if you know what you are doing.

There are ways but... Reason 1 is my headgasket is seeping oil anyway so its getting a gasket regardless, and reason 2 is that the roller rockers on the later mk2 engine are bolted down with the headbolts, the only way to get the cam in and out is to slacken off the head bolts completly as the tension from the valve springs acting on the rockers wont allow the cam to be removed.

I would never slacken off the headbolts and not change the headgasket, your asking for trouble. Im a fully skilled mechanic by trade and i like to do things properly, rather than strip it all down again a week later and i wouldnt advise anyone to do it any other way , considering a h/g is £20

If you know what you are doing then you would do it properly and change the headgasket unless you can take the camshaft out without removing the head bolts

    +timing belt kit
+water pump if you are smart
    +head skim

All adds up mate. When I did mine I was way over £150 for service parts never mind the cam.

Yeah i agree mate, it always come to more than you think. Mines had a waterpump and new cambelt. Used a straight edge on the head and couldnt even get a .003 feeler gauge under at any point lol. I was well shocked

If the belt is already new then it will not need replacing, removing and refitting the belt will have no effect on its life
