Sluggish Start then cutting out?

So I did a 700 mile round trip over the weekend in the Saxo and surprisingly it made it unscathed.

However after arriving back home last night, parked the car up and went to use it this morning, it struggled to start and when it did start it would just cut out when left to idle.

As I was needing the car I started again and had to push the accelerator as well to get the car started and then had to physically hold the revs between 10-15k rpm to keep the car from cutting out.

After driving for a little while the car was fine and was idling fine, but when stopped at traffic lights and junctions sometimes the car was revving aggressively by itself?

    Any ideas?

Remove, clean and replace the idle control valve, they get clogged up. At a push replace it as there cheap enough.

Yeah I read that this may be a problem for the revving, would this cause the sluggish start and cutting out as well?

Also is the idle control valve easily removed?
