Bad mpg on 16v

    Hi,

I was just wondering what could cause very poor mpg on a 16v 106 gti, it has standard air filter and exhaust system etc but I think it has had the cat cut out and a pipe welded in place.

My other car is an 03 leon cupra 1.8 20v turbo running just shy of 250bhp and it seems to be using the same if not more than that.

Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Also just to note, I did notice yesterday my temperature seemed very low close to the bottom after a 20mile drive although the heaters were warm

    Thanks.

Try giving it a service mate.

Assuming its using it more than average then it could be overfueling or even a small leak, although this is less likely.

Work out your actual MPG to see what it is first.

Brim the tank, drive the car, when the red light comes on brim it again and see how many litres go back in and then work out your MPG.

If you are hooning it were ever possible and sitting in a lot of traffic likely hood is you'll get 20-25mpg.

If your putting in a tenner here and there, the fuel gauge (atleast on mine) is very poor - hence the initial suggestion.

as above really, fill the tank rather than just the odd bit to work out your fuel consumption, i thought i was getting no more than 30 on my xsi, only ever put in £20 at time (get paid weekly, and i never used more) i filled up a couple of times recently and work out i'm getting 34mpg.

You say you've done 20 miles and the temp is low? The thermostat could be stuck open, which means the engine is running cold and using more fuel maybe?

Well the temp on the gauge is very low after I had drove to work this morning, I am sure my previous GTI that I had sat at around half way most of the time

The gauge was very low but the heaters were coming out warm and fine as they should so I was wondering maybe the temperature sensor is faulty and telling it to run more fuel or something?

Yeah it should get up to temp quite quickly, and with it being warmish lately, (16-20C?) ambient temperature then it should be about halfway. There's probably enough heat to warm the cabin, but not enough to raise engine temp, as you say temp sensor is a good shout so check/change thermostat and temp sensor.

    before you go spending money
run car about to your normal temp -then stop --leve engine runing
how long before fan comes on ?
should be with a couple of minutes ,if not then thermostat is wrong
    replace sat and retest
your gauge could just be reading wrong.
the gauge should be at least 3/4 when fan comes on
