hello im new to this site so apologies if this has been answered, anyways my vtr is 2001 and fuel gage likes to bounce from empty to full a few times before settling a the bottom, now i done what i see on here, get a wire, earthd it under the rear seats and joined the earth wire to the thickest yellow/green wire on the fuel sender unit which is second from the end on the connecter block and my gage is still doing the same, really annoying me tbh, my engine temp also wasnt working but i sorted that by pluggin it back in under the bonnet (blue clip) so that one is rectified, only other problem with my dash apart from fuel is when i indicate, the indicators work but the green arrows on dash dont flash, so is it really the earth thats the problem with my fuel gage or could it be the dials in which case needing a new unit? it seemed to be kinda ok when i first got the car, needle went from empty to half when i topped it up but few miles later is when it stopped working and been like it since. any info or help be appreciated

#2When you turn the ignition on, can you hear the fuel pump priming under rear seat?
-
#3yh when i attached that earth and turnt ignition on i did hear it wind up or start pumping made some noise like it was working properly probs what your on about yes
-
#4In that case it only leaves the clocks
-
#5oh right well ill try hit scrapyard then see if i can get some, would u recommend i take the earth off i done earlier n try clocks that way first with the original earth ?
-
#6Don't think it'll make any difference to be honest but if it makes you feel better then go for it lol
-
#7lol well hopefully it does the trick is so annoying not knowing how much fuel i got, thanks for your input tho dude
-
#8The sender is a different device to the fuel pump though both in the same housing. Just because you can hear your fuel pump prime does not mean that the sender is fine.
If your clocks bounce three times it's the sender. -
#9As mentioned, just because you can hear the pump priming it doesnt rule out the sender. On my vts i had the same problem, turned out to be the sender, so i'd check that out before you go ripping your dials out.
-
#10it only took me a matter of 5 mins to take my dials out anyways so the time it takes ent a problem, how easy is the sender to do ? least with clocks its only a matter of 2 blocks to unplug n plug in. i was kinda hopin it would be clocks, looks easier

#11Lift up rear seats, remove large plastic bung, unclip and bung two fuel pipes, remove connector, unscrew locking ring, pull out pump/sender assy.
Piece of piss -
#12As mentioned above its a pretty simple job. I was more meaning the fact you'll fit different dials which wont have the correct mileage etc, not how hard it is to replace them.
-
#13ahhh yes very true tht would piss me off fitting new dials with sky high mileage lol.. thts a good point, think what ill do tho is just test different dials first b4 i buy em n see if it works, if it dnt channge then ill know its the sender, im down in torquay atm miles away from home so looking for a scrapyard round here atm to do that. unfortunately i dont know the area as there is some other things i need down here too
grr
