Balljoint

On my mot failure sheet, it says there is play in both (offside and nearside) of the suspension balljoints. Is this the one on the wishbone?

If so, how do you get it off? Is it held in by anything or do you just hit it out? Do you need to take the driveshaft off or will it drop down? I have done the driveshafts before but never a ball joint.

Big vice or press. Yeah its the one in the lower arm

Or people find it easier to just replace the whole wishbone

So is it knocked out then? I understand its gonna be hard to budge anyway as its probably never been changed

By the time you piss about getting the wishbones off and getting new ball joints in you may as well replace the wishbones. Plus if the ball joints on its way out chances are the other bushes will be worn.

To be honest I'm just getting it through the MOT and then selling it on. Bought the balljoints this morning so new wishbones aren't an option now. Cheers for the advice on that though guys.

Does look fairly simple to do though. So how does the balljoint comes out? Is it just brute force?

    yes, use a press.

Don't think oh they will hammer out been there done that made a right mess, never again.

A bit heat never hurt. Might be worth whipping the wishbones off and seeing if you can get a garage to get them out and press the new ones in. It'll save a load of swearing and frustration!
  11. #11
You pretty much end up destroying them putting them back in.
There should be a proper tool to put on the press to push them back in. Because of the angle of the arm.

Right, they wouldn't come out so taken the wishbones out instead. Do most garages do balljoint pressing? I am working 8:30-5:45 tomorrow so I can't do it, will have to send the mother to do it as the MOT is Friday.

You'd have had to taken the wishbone out anyways got no chance leaving it on the car trying to get them out.
  14. #14
How much should I expect to pay to have them done?

How much am I likely to pick up a second hand set at a breakers for?
  15. #15
Wouldn't get a second hand set. Could be worse off.
Dunno I'd expect to pay at least £30 I would have thought
  16. #16
It's only going to be for about a week as I'm getting rid of the car anyway

On a old car I just went in to a garage and asked the bloke to do it he done it quick and for £15

There's always someone who'll do it for a few quid on a lunch break.

See if its that cheap I will do it but if its looking like £30, I can get a pair brand new delivered for £52. And I've already paid £20 for the balljoints if you see what I mean. Don't know what to do cos I want my car back.
