Driving on 708s without remap

  1. #1
mates car is going for a dastek remap on monday, VTS engine fitted with 708s on standard timing marks. Bit lumpy on idle tbh. Thought that changing to a 3.5bar fpr would redress the fuelling imbalance a little in the short drive to the mappers.

All things considered it should be ok to drive, avoiding high revs, shouldnt it?
  2. #2
at part load it *should* be ok. The increased overlap will reduce the burn rate at part load meaning that the peak cylinder pressure will occur later meaning that the ignition should be safe. It also partly explains the poor idle combustion stability. Does it have a AFR gauge?
  3. #3
Sadly it doesnt have an afr. Bugger it, if it holes a piston its time for high comps! Which would be a shame as its not my engine but would be me building it :-( lol

    Thanks dude.

It will be fine dude, i been running my 16v on Catcam's 743's for over 18 months now unmapped standerd timing

do you notice difference in the power after fitting these cam?

    Yes you can

found mine pretty flat untill a certain RPM, then pulled nicely, ran mine unmapped for a good ammount of time aswell no problems

Got the car in question mapped today, 152bhp, which wasnt too bad at all.

What cams are these?when I search catcams on websites like pug1off and kamracinf all it comes away with is different numbers to the ones you mention like 708 etc etc.

    iirc theyre 1321708

Ah I see, refers to the last 3 numbers

And 743's I am told are the ones to go for,no modifications other than a remap and they will work fine.

Decent air filter and a manifold aswell

what did Ecu cost u ? And map ?
  14. #14
Mapping was about 150, dastek the same.
  15. #15
what can vts turbo push on standerd engine with dastek Ecu with t2 ?

where did u get remap done off ?
  17. #17
A Dastek dealer up by Stirling.

As for power figures, no idea. Youll need either a Dastek Q+ or a turbo module for a Q to run a turbo iirc.
  18. #18
Where is the one in Stirling that does the remap?

That's good to know,I'm not too far away.

Do they have a RR as well?

Am from Sheffield is there any dastek remappers near me ? Or any other piggy I can use ? I only wana run turbo map for abt 7 psi

AFAIK the dastek unichip can't increase the std rev limit, if that's still the case your mate will be missing some power as 708's don't peak till 7500rpm normally.

A way round it is to fit an eBay "grp n" chip with a 7800rpm rev limit...

Peak power came at 7k by the looks of it, cams were set to standard marks though as Id been told 708s were made to suit standard timing marks. Doesnt account for manufacturing tolerance variation i suppose. May check them once Ive got my dti back from my mate, then get the car back for a wee map tweak, but in the meantime it seems not a bad result

    Flames y0!

Im under pressure to fit cams and omex to my car now...

    And a wee video

never seen 708,s max max power at 7500 --unless you compromise the rest of the power rangeby moving away from designed timings ,loosing everywhere else in the process
700-7200 is about the best compromise and for use with std ecu close the ex cam till it idles best and max power will be be around 7000-7100

Thanks John. Going to try adjusting the exhaust cam this weekend to see how it goes, as idle is pretty damn rough just now.
