Catcams 708's with standard pulleys

Can you use standard pulleys with 708's on a vts?

If so are the easily adjusted?
  2. #2
Yes you can but no they aren't easily adjusted like aftermarket pulleys IMO its a job left for a garage I fitted mine with a hand from a Mate then ran it on STD timing marks and got pug1off to time them in specialist tools and knowledge is required so I won't pretend I know how to do it lol

So if I just put the cams in at standard timing and leave the pulleys as the are it will run.

I know it will be lumpy on idle until mapped

yea it'll run fine (as in it wont do any damage), but then yea you will want them timed in to the catcam specs and then mapped

they can be adjusted very easily, just as easy as an aftermarket pulley.

all you need is a dial gauge and a stand to hold it, the lift @ TDC spec for the cam, and to mark TDC on the crank pulley.

and how many people on the forum have this equipment or would have the confidence to do it themselves, aftermarket pulleys are much easier to adjust

not to mention so much easier to adjust quickly on a dyno

I cannot see what makes an aftermarket pulley easier to adjust than the standard adjustable pulley?

you need the equipment regardless of the type of pulley used.

as far as im aware the aftermarket pulleys such as these
    http://peugeot-tuning-parts.co.uk/vernier-pulleys.html

have all the holes on them so you can slacken off the bolts rotate the cam without having to rotate the pulley itself, lock it in to the specified degrees then tighten the bolts back up

i was under the assumption aftermarket pulleys are adjusted without the need for specialist tools, otherwise what would be the point in them over oem vts pulleys?

only a catcams pulley has all those holes, and personally having seen several instances of spectacularly poor machining work I would never buy any of them at full price.

most other aftermarket pulley will be the same as an o.e vts unit, but without the timing pin hole (bar the BBM pulleys)

you ALWAYS need a dial gauge regardless of which type of adjustable pulley you have, how else will you know when the cam has hit a specific amount of lift @ TDC, or reached its peak lift?

the benefit of an aftermarket unit is that they will not break under sustained high RPM use with heavy valve springs, which the standard 3 bolt adjustable o.e pulley is known for.
