Brake Discs, Pads, Ball Joints

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

I took the saxo to the garage for him to tell me what NEEDS to be done.

    1. Brakes
    2. Ball Joints

I have bought front brake pads (Eicher?) and front brake discs.
I have also bought both ball joints.

I got quoted by garage £130 (£70 for ball joint, £80 for brakes) - I think this is outrageous.

Any special tools I need when changing any of the above? I read I may need torx set?

    It's a 4 stud 1.1 X reg

    Cheers
    Ben

Ball joints are a fuck on. You have to press the old ones out and the new ones in. It makes more sense to just put new wish bones on, then you can do them yourself. I'd say £70 to do the ball joints is roughly right as it'll take about a hour.

Brakes seems to be really expensive, just do them yourself. Take 15 minutes.

As above. Ball joints are basically not do-able at home unless you have a press, and can be a bit of a coont to do so that price seems acurate. As Mick said its a feck ton easier to buy a pair of lower arms and do them instead. As well as being do-able by the home mechanic (although get ready to wrestle with the ball joint getting it out of the hub) you would be replacing the old worn suspension bushes with nice tight new ones. Win WIn. And seeing as you have to take the brakes off anyway to get at the lower arms (makes life harder if you dont) you may as well put the new kit back on yourself as well.

15 mins to do at home?
takes me that long to jack it up and get the wheels off lol

on a serious note tho, it will be more likely closer to an hour to do.
80 quid to do the front brakes at a garage isnt bad at all.
Thats about what i charge to do them privately at home on most cars
