Important! : VTS Aux air pump woes?

  1. #1
I wondered if any of you guys may be able to help. I have an 03 plate VTS, and recently it has started making an unusual noise. The aux air pump emits a pretty loud whine on startup, which soon goes away, but then when idling there is a kind of glugging noise coming from the hose which runs along the top of the rad? It does it whether the pump is connected or not. Any ideas whether to sack off the whole system, and what plug is required to fill the hole in the manifold, or of any other solutions to the problem?

    Thanks in advance,

    Will

There is hole in the manifold for it. Theres 2 little bolts holding it to the head and 2 for the side for the metal pipe.

Should I just remove the whole lot then? Or replace with similar from a scrappy?

    Cheers,

Right, so block the pipe, and remove the rest, and block the hole in the mani too. Do they need to be tough or aren't they under much pressure? Sorry for all the questions, I just don't wanna mess it up.

air pump doesn't make glugging noises. It's like a hairdryer, it helps burn excess fuel when it's cold to heat the cat up faster, which also prevents raw fuel touching the cat and makes it last longer in theory.

As soon as the pump is off, the pipes make no noise.

Not likely any part of the air pump system is making the noise at idle. If you remove it, the EML will be permanently lit as well - which MOT man will not like.

Any ideas on what the noise may be? It's every couple of seconds, and definitely sounds like it's from that area? Air lock in the rad/hosing maybe?

Yes it could be an air lock.

There's a guide for the correct bleeding procedure lurking on the site

I'm sure the air pump hose runs down the side of the rad, under the slam panel then up into the passenger arch where the pump is.

Right ok no worries, I've found the guide for rad fitting and bleeding, and I've got a new rad to go in too as the fix in the old one are damaged. I'll fit that and see how it goes, thank you for all the help/opinions/advice from everyone!

    Cheers again,

To rule out the fresh air pump, you could just unplug the power to it - the pump sits just in front of the front N/S arch liner.

Yeah I have done that, and the noise was still there. Answers that then, it must be the water system. New rad and bleed it is then!

lit EML's don't look good. It makes people think your car is neglected.

    Saxo's are neglected enough.

Right so the new radiator is fitted, and seems it have solved the noise! However, a new query, whilst following the guide on here for bleeding, my bleed points appear to be reversed? (Top valve cap one first, then Allen key, and finally the rad one). Does anyone know if this is problematic? It seems to work ok, though does get hot quite quickly?

    Cheers,

    How are they reversed?

Apparently you are supposed to get fluid from the rad one first, and then from the middle one, then the top one? Or doesn't it matter? Apologies if I'm bring ridiculous haha.

Use the header tank method to bleed it

I did :/. Attached an upside down bottle, taped it perfectly, no leaks :/. Filled from that, or am I doing something wrong?

    Cheers,

Did you run it with the bottle attached?
  22. #22
I did yes... Or do you take it off and put the rad cap on?
