Battery

  1. #1
    Hey,
I bought a new battery for my car about a year ago, it was used for a few months, then was dormant for about 8 months. The battery was flat, so I charged it up. the car worked fine for 3 days, then i've just got in to drive it, and the battery is completely dead. I'm charging it again, but would this be an alternator problem, or a battery problem/ other?

    thanks
    Sam

    could be a battery problem.

If the battery was left flat for that length of time, the battery has probably had it. I had that happen to me

Start the car, measure the voltage with the engine running. if it's 13v or more your alternator is working.

I'm lucky it happened while at home and not at the gym or something. MOT booked tomorrow though :/ I'm charging it currently, can I put it in prematurely to test it/ charge using alternator?

    Thanks

No, the car won't idle with no battery in it.

You said it was fine for 3 days after a charge, MOT only lasts an hour at most

I ment take the battery off charge, put it back into the car, then let it idle

    Yeah it'll do that.

    So, can I do that?

It's been on charge for about 2 hours

Try it, if it starts just let it tick over and check the voltage on the battery make sure it's about 14v

Right, put the battery in the car, started engine, measured 14.25v between the negative and positive, should I buy a new battery then?

    Thanks guys

I've just had a though, does your multimeter measure current? might be worth checking the draw. you may have a current leak somewhere, that could be draining your battery?

It measures ohms etc, the only thing in is an amp, remote cable working fine as not lighting up unless turned on at HU
