VTS questions!

Hi guys, still fairly new on the forum and slowly working my way around my v reg(facelift) vts.

What is the normal water temp for a vts, at the moment mine sits quite well bang on the middle, then when I hit traffic it will creep up to the 3/4 mark on the gauge then as the fan kicks in it drops a little. However while sitting in non moving traffic a few days ago for around 15mins it did creep a little higher than the 3/4 mark, got a little close to the red marks at the top of the gauge. Made me panic a little, it cooled itself nicely down when the traffic started moving again. If this is normal then I'm happy- would rather know just for peace of mind tho! My last cars water temp would sit around the middle all the time, so watching it get hot worried me!

Secondly what oil do people use and how many litres does a vts engine hold? I'm planning on getting a service done ASAP.

    Thanks in advance

My water temp usually sits at half and goes upto around 3/4s in traffic, i crap myself too much when it gets that high as the fan hasn't kicked in so I stick the heaters on full to bring it down abit!

It should never bring the light on or be close to in traffic or not

Mine sits half in traffic hot weather/cold.

Cool, so there's something for me to look into then. The light hasn't come on yet.

Iv checked my levels, anything obvious this could be? What are the most logical things to check next.

    Cheers guys

I would be flushing the coolant system, fitting a new thermostat and of course adding anti freeze when you re fill.
Can't do any harm even if thats not the issue.

How old is the thermostat? id change that with fresh coolant/water and bleed it properly.

Sounds like a safe bet to me, with the thermostat I assume it's best to buy genuine from main dealer, how much is this likely to cost? Also is this a job that I'm likely to be able to take on myself? I'm fairly good at following guides etc, got a half decent supply of tools and know how to use them.

Also with bleeding the system- is there a guide on this?

Thanks for your replies very helpful

My vts never goes above halfway, I would be almost certain you need a new thermostat.

    Decent enough guide here

My vts used to sit just below half normally and in slow traffic around half. Then really hot days and traffic combined up towards 3/4 and then the fan would kick in.
As stevo said, wouldn't bother with Citroen for the thermostat you can get decent ones from local motor factors.

Cheers for that mate, already took a little read of that. Doesn't seen to be to hard a job, it's just finding time is a bit of an issue at the moment!

Think I will look to get it done as part of a larger service including Cambelt etc as according to my paper work it was last done in 2009, even tho it hasn't even done 15k since then! Plenty of oil changes have been done since then which is nice to see, but I would just like to give it a good full service for piece of mind. I'd better put a few extra hours in so I can get busy!

Cheers for all the replies, all very useful information.

Mine use to do as you explained above.. I was waiting in KFC drive threw for ages and when i finally got to pay it decided to give in and smoke like a right bum nugget. All the water from rad came out etc. Refilled it and from then was fine =s

I wouldn't take what the gauge tells you as gospel, mine sits at 3/4 and everything on the cooling side is as new with twin fans, 82 degree stat etc

Mines did sit high when I first got it but it wasn't bleed correctly so would give that a try first.

    Now sits about half way
