Oil in water

  1. #1
    Hi
Today i done a coolant change on my 1999 1.1 saxo as the water seemed a bit dirty and lacking any antifreeze.
I removed bottom hose and drained into bowl and i noticed maybe 6-8 splodges of oil floating on top of the water.
i flushed through until water came out clean and refilled with new antifreeze water mix,i bleed system then i noticed a few more brown marks a top of the filler neck car which was from oil.
So i was worried what was causing this could it be head gasket failure?
i did change the oil last week and that was fine no water in the oil.
any advice would be greatly appreciated .

Head gasket is starting to go I'd say.
I wouldnt worry overly too much for now though, the 8vs are known for this as the head gasket breaks down at the front left corner of the block leaking externally and usually across an oil and water way. Luckily this is quite far from the fire rings so coolant shouldn't be leaking into the bores. Its worth repairing if you are keeping the car as it will get worse over time but that said I did about 30k in mine with the same problem, would just get the odd splodge of oil turning up in the coolant.
That said yours could be worse but then I'd expect you to be losing oil or water

Could always be some old gunk clogged as quick said. Give it a few flushes and see how it goea

    Hi
    many thanks for the reply's
I hope it is not head gasket failure as my old car a vw passat tdi suffered with this and the garage wanted over £700 to fix.
so i sold the passat and brought this saxo hopefully if it is the headgasket it will last a while yet seams to be running fine doesn't use any water like the passat so i will keep it running and keep an eye on it.
I would prefer to keep the car as i had to do quite a bit of work on it to get through the mot.
Im not even sure what cargo is if it is anything like the k seal rubbish that i put in my passat i wouldn't bother because all the k seal did was make the car a lot worse by blocking up the waterways.

Has there been any other signs of HG failure?

emulsification on the underside of the oil cap,on the dipstick?

Do you do a lot of short journeys?do you have to top the coolant up much,if at all?

How's the water temp, any difference from before,or is it completely normal?

Not really only realized today when i drained coolant and see the oil in water,no emulsification on the underside of the oil cap,or the dipstick i changed the oil last week no signs of water in oil
there was some small brown deposits at the top of the radiator filler tube which i thought was from rusty water but water wasn't rusty it was oil.
My car doesn't have a temp gauge only a warning light which has never come on.
the car runs fine no issues.

I wouldn't worry about it for now.
My 1.4 furio had the same. Bit of oil floating ontop of the coolant in the header tank.
Sill a slight sign of oil after I did the head gasket.
Never had a problem with it.
Head didn't need skimming when I replaced head gasket.

I have had two 1.1 Saxos, mk1 and mk2 do this and tbh its never caused a problem other than losing some water occasionally however the mk2 has now decided to bubble over alot its done it 3 times this week so its time for a new head gasket for the little car

a combustion leak test is easy enough to do and head gaskets on saxo's arent a hard job. fair enough i am a mechanic by trade but the first head gasket i ever did was on m ex's vtr and its still running spot on

most 8v engines are a piece of piss to do and can be done withing 2 hours all being that the head is not warped ect

It's worth having a machine shop clean up the head face anyway I reckon

if your lucky enough to have the tools at work to do so its even better

Do you do a lot of short journeys?

This can cause emulsification as well so if you ain't getting coolant loss or higher temps then I wouldn't worry about it too much just now.

I would normally use it to get to work which was about 20 miles 10 miles either way lots of main roads doing between 30-50 mph.
But i lost my job at the end of September so been only doing short journeys and occasional longer journey i now have a new job which comes with van so i will probably only be using car a couple of times a week now,so i wont be worrying about oil in water as car seems to be running fine.
you can seen a couple of oil marks at the top of the filler neck but apart from that car runs great.

its a shame your not abit closer, i could do the job disgustingly cheap for you (at my workshop after hours)
