MK2 VTR Cam

  1. #1
    Hi,

Looking at getting myself a new cam for my mk2 vtr, but there's so many on the market I'm not too sure what to get, the current mods are thebusual, saxsport system decat and air filter, I've seen a set of Newman ph3s for sale for decent money but will these be not really ideal for a daily drive and need a map? It's my daily drive so want something usable really, will be used on track next season but also would like to use it around town practically, love the lumpy idle aswell, preferably a cam that doesn't need a map or is that pointless doing? As funds are low with insurance tax and Xmas landing on the same month (ouch)

    Thanks

    Newman ph3 will be fine.
My mate had a set in his vtr engines quicksilver. And apart from cutting out occasionally at traffic lights it were fine.

Did he get it mapped or not? And did it make any difference and what was the idle like? Cheers for your reply fella

No he sold it on before he got round to it.
It made around 106bhp on rolling road.
Idle wasn't too bad tbf. I didn't even know it were cammed until he said lol.
Sitting along time it kind of hunted a little but not too bad.

Okay dude, i read online that the PH3 cant be run with standard fueling etc on the VTR and reccommended Throttle Body setup and so on?

what are the specs for the ph3? If I recall its not that far from a rallye J cam? if so I run one of those without issue really but using the earlier management (single plug)

Is that the standard cam for a rallye? S2 i imagine? and i have the 3 Plug on mine, think its 110 degree iirc

Yeah the J cam was fitted to the s1 rallye, s2 and 1.6 xsi

Yh it says on Newman website that.
Just a remap is no longer std injection .
But like I say it ran ok on it plenty of power. With a lot more scope with a remap.

Oh sweet, are they cheap to pick up? Noticable difference on VTR? Roller Rocker? straight fit? Lumpy Idle? Need a remap?

Oh thats alright then! Remap is costly though, could be about 600 maybe more incl price of cam

You'd need the whole head really, it wont fit roller rocker heads as its designed for normal style rockers and it also doesnt fit a black top head due to different bearing sizes. Plus on a 3 plug you'd not be able to use your current inlet as its got the wrong port layout, plus there might be wiring issues going from 3 plug to a single plug style head although its probably feasible with some loom splicing but ive not looked into this.
Much cheaper really to get a cam designed for your engine however when things get serious most folk drop the roller rockers.
But yeah I run mine with no remap and it idles a bit lumpy but not that badly, its doesnt cut out

well thats alot more hassle than i bargained for to be fair!! like you said easier to just get a set of cams designed for my engine, Its between the mild cams without map option like the PH1s or the PH3 route which IIRC needs a remap really to run properly? what one?
  13. #13
Ph3 do not NEED a remap.
Although to get the best out of it and to sort the slightly lumpy idle out yes a remap is needed.
However remaps are only like £200-300 anyways.
If you have other mods aswell it won't be wasted.

all depends how the cam behaves really and are any other mods planned at later date?

Yeah eventually will be looking at possibly bodies but thats later later, not anytime soon basically, change the open filter for a carbon cold air style. So will it be safe to run on the Standard Map? and be an improvement over standard on the PH3s?
