nothing worth while on a 1.1,
only thing you can do is put a vtr/vts lump in tbh

I keep saying it and I'll say it again...an induction kit. Adds silly kinds of power, you may need to upgrade the clutch, gearbox, tyres, brakes all sorts if you fit an induction kit. Worth it though, be looking at 800+bhp

If you don't fancy that though then yes, a new engine would be best way

Theres a 1.1 posted on here that has the same bhp or more iirc as a vts.

But thats serious money so just wait it out untill you can afford something quicker

It's not true that you can't tune a 1.1 because you can bu it will cost you a lot UNLESS you good with your hands, small engines have been tuned for years, (fiat uno/punto 1.2turbo,starlet glanza, mk1 fiesta 1300supersport, suzuki swift 1.3 gti) this list goes on and on, people always suggest "drop a vtr or vts lump in there" which to be honest doesn't answer the question you asked, yes it would be easy and worth while BUT there are things you can have done to your 1.1, firstly with all cars that have smaller engines get the handling done first brakes, suspention, bushes, the reason this is so important is if you car handles better you don't have to slow down as much for corner ect, there for not having to gain as much speed again once you exit the corner, then as with all small cars weight reduction is key, shave as much weight from the car as possible (rear seats, door cards, radio, speakers, plastic windows ect less weight means you have a better power to weight ratio, then the tuning of the engine, firstly breathing mods to start with a good cold air feed can be brought from eBay for as little as £25, then a 421 or a 41 exhaust manifold will decat your car as well as allow the air to flow freely out of the engine, then a good exhaust system id recommend a 2" pugsport or a kam racing system, then if this isn't enough you could look have having the ports on the head matched to the size of the inlet and exhaust manifold and polished... There area. Few this I'm not sure about but will suggest and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong or you could just go a hard and be the first to try it,

"vtr inlet manifold injectors and throttle bodie I know they will have all the same plugs but I don't know if they will fit your head or flow better but could be a good cheap mod to see a few extra ponies in the stables, a standard vtr cam may be able to be fitted or even a after market one, also either fit a unlocked vtr ecu I know this will work but the gains I'm not sure about and would only be any use if all breathing mods have been done.hope some of the information is helpful.

I think the point is if you did all that, it ain't going to do much to the performance its still guna be shit slow.
Just wait and get a vts/gti

Stick the car in neutral & let me tow it,guaranteed to make it go faster.

Start with basic breathing mods, a decent exhaust system, full service, and that's about as good as it gets with a 1.1 still a fun car to drive it's never going to be quick by any means without engine conversion etc... But they are fun cars even as standard IMO

You can get performance varieties of the 8v engines below 1600cc, this would be the best route to go down should you wish to stay 8v and lower capacity. Wouldn't bother keeping the 1.1 bottom end and head though if that much money is going to be spent though you'd regret the restrictions imposed by it

Its not going to go faster, just sit and be happy that it costs pennys to run on fuel
  11. #11
doing the same idea myself only a 1.0 but just gunna see what i get out of it, to me its not about cost/power ratio or being sensible its just a challenge and when you put lots of graft in and people see you pull away from them...then find out its a 1.0 it just adds a whole lot of character to the car, i.e its not just your average vts or rallye lumped pug or sax

How are you going to get it to make the power though? Breathing mods will only add so much

I'm going to be a twat and add "chuck it off a cliff and it will do the fastest 0-60mph it will ever do, and be almost effortless"

I think it is, what's not fun about it? Can go to the moon and back on A tank of fuel how is that not fun?

    Don't bother wasting your money.

Keep it for a year or two and have fun with it, Saxo's are cheap to repair and easy to drive. A 1.1 can be just as much fun as a VTR if you know how to drive it!

Okay guys, well then, ill just drive my saxo until insurance and MOT ends, what should i get next, VTR, VTS or 106 GTi?
  18. #18
Depends how old you are / how many ncb etc you have - I'd say to check the insurance quotes page first, a VTR for me is about £450 a year (fully comp with me and my gf), but a VTS on the same quote is £750+, so pays to check stuff out beforehand.
For me, a 1.0 or a 1.1 would be £200, so its a BIG difference.

Not to mention the difference in fuel consumption too, so depends how many miles you do and what your general budget is.

As above, I'd check insurance first.

    Vtr's are nippy little cars but a 16v is 10 times more fun. I'd get a gti/vts.
  20. #20
Well I have had both a 1.4 sx and currently got a 1.1mpi and to be honest yes it is 15bhp less but in a car weighing next to nothing i don't really notice any difference, and i love how nippy it is. Yes it does have a lower top speed, but thats down to the gearbox too as it has lower ratios compared to a 1.4/1.6 and certainly prefer the 1.1 to the 1.8 mondeo i ain't long got rid of. (either that or someone changed the 1.1 engine before i got it with a 1.4 or 1.6 lol)

If its a TU1JP there's a company over here that change you're standard feul map in the ECU for a custom one and claims you to gain 11 horses

    Induction kit
    Individual throttle body's
    421 exhaust manifolt
    "porting" your cylinder head
"cat" option (dunno the English term)

But only if you're reason is to want to keep the 1124CC for the fun of it and trie to get as much horses out of it (like me ) I'll recomend swapping the lump
