port and polish

    alright

    im looking into getting my cylinder head ported and polished but want to know if its going to be worth the time and money

    if anyone has done this what were the results

    Apparently its good for a 10% increase.

    The goosed engine that came with my vts had the head port and polished,and with a decat exhaust system and induction kit it was good for a 15.1 1/4 mile.

    No idea mate,it was already done when i bought the car,the engine was already goosed when I got it.

    If not done properly/carefully it will ruin your head mate. From the ill bit of research I've done it's quite scientific

    As above mate I would get it done properly,not entirely sure how much it will cost but its better to know that its done properly.

    You could always buy the head I have,just needs rebuilt after piston valve contact.

    Seems reasonable and would work out cheaper if you send them a head to work on......it doesn't matter if its a j4 or not as I'm presuming he can work on any cylinder head.

    I reckon so.....

    When you think of the increased power from 8v to 16v because you can get more air/fuel into the engine and the exhaust gasses out quicker then the same principle applies.......

    With the inlet being slightly larger it will allow more air/fuel in increasing the power,added to that a decent 4 branch manifold and a full exhaust system then it should be noticeably better.

    Depends on the rest of the engine spec and the amount of air your demanding.

    Decent P&P prices are usually around the £500-£600 mark. A lot of people seem to think that removing as much material as possible is the key but its not.

    I would say that P&P prices usually aren't warranted if your N/A on standard inlet.

    Dont you just pour fine sand like they use for sand-blasting into the air filter and let the car run for a few hundred miles? Its a really cheap mod!

    ^ i think he is reffering to a guy who actually did this to an Audi ....

    Port and polish will benefit more when you accompany with "wilder " camshafts and throttle bodies ,
    If you are going to keep the rest of the engine standard it is simply not worth it cost wise.

    I certainly wouldn't 'polish' anything!!! That's a complete no-no and will utterly ruin your engine.

    on the 16v, you get huge amounts of power from the exhaust port and any butcher can get great gains by just going at it with a grinding stone on a dremel. The intake needs nothing doing to it until you are way into the high 100's of BHP as they are huge as standard. May get some from grinding the valve guide back flush with the head, but then you reduce the ability of the valve to dissipate heat.

    For gods sake, DONT polish the intake port, it should be 220-odd grit roughness

    I always thought polish ment flattening out any imperfection of the porting !
    Don't think anyone "polishes " intakes to a mirror finish... That causes fuel droplets to condensate on the alloy , or am i wrong??

    different cam will make more bhp for less money
    porting etc is what you do after you have cammed it
    choice of cam will depend on if you are keeping ecu std

    Exhaust side on the 16v head is worth a lot, I've seen +10% requirement on fuelling to maintain similar AFR's compared with prior to porting

    Any time you are increasing the amount of air in the engine you need a remap. The ECU only knows when the throttle is wide open, and the MAP signal is 'atmosphere'. I don't know how the ECU would know to put more fuel in if you are flowing more air at the same temperature? It's not got a HotWire or Flap-type AFM so if the air temp stays the same, how would the ECU know to alter the fuel? It's not running the narrowband sensor at Wide Open Throttle. Best you can do is fit an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, wind it up so that peak torque WOT you are getting sensible AFR's, then let the lambda sensor fiddle about at part throttle hopefully get something sensible
