first things to do....

hey guys I have my little 1.1, 51 plate silver saxo

what I want to find out from this thread is where to start in terms of modifying it. I have a cone filter already (not yet fitted) and that is all. I welcome any suggestions as to what can be done. when I bought then car is was ready lowered (torsion bar adjusted on the rear, lowering springs on the front) and I also have alloys for it.

depending on my situation in the next couple of years will depend on how serious I am with this car (in terms of trying to make it actually quite quick) but for now I just want to make it nippy.

lets just say that for the moment I would be happy for it to crack sub 10's to 60. nothing mental , just nippy

to get any kind of performance out of it on a sensible budget you will need to change the engine. What engine you go for depends on personal preference, insurance costs and how much power you want

Hi, I brought a stock 1.4i Saxo and started with obvious things!

    Air filter
    Exhaust + De-cat
    Stockport Manifold
    Manifold cover
    Show cage
    Lowered front and rear
    Vts interior
    Show cage
Side light, dipped beam bulbs, rear n/p bulbs
And then all your personal touches on top!

This would be your best bet,it won't cost that much either and if you're handy enough with a spanner then it should be even cheaper.

Most conversions that are for sale come with everything you need and usually sell for less than £500.

Forget power. It is not going to happen with this engine.
Manifold and exhaust to sound good, a proper suspension kit to get the car low and handling well, then look at cosmetic mods to improve the style.

i am not looking for huge power, just a little bit of a boost

i should be certainly capable of an engine change and i have looked into it and the prices dont sound too bad

but then again for ease the obvious air and exhaust mods sound cheaper...

i thought of these already but which ones are tried, tested and seem most beneficial for cost?

How many bhp did the vtr badge give ?

The price of a good cold air feed, 421/41 manifold and decent exhaust system is about £300 all in if you buy 2nd hand and £400 if you buy new, and will see you about 10bhp in total if your lucky, a vtr engine and unlocked ecu that will fit straight in place of your current engine and ecu (no need to cut or swap looms) will come in at about £100/£200 and will come standard at 90bhp or 98bhp depending on year of engine.... Then if that's not enough power looks at cams/exhaust/intake/polishing/porting/remaps/lightening and balancing or BOOST! Everyone says it I used to hate it but it's simply so much easier to swap the engines, and if you would prefer VTS/GTI lump it's almost the same process engine bolts in exhaust will match up , the the correct loom and it will plug straight in and then ecu and that's 130 bhp standard

If you are going to do an engine change then consider replacing the car. Saxo's are rock bottom. VTR and VTS's are going for under £500. So cheap my neighbour has at least four parked outside lol

    cool, cheers dude

and they arent quite that cheap, my uncle just sold a vtr for £1000 soo...

plus my saxo cost more than £500

They are that cheap if you look in the right places though. You can't give VTRs away on here

There is plenty about for sale in and around £500-£800

I picked mine up for £300 as a non runner hoping it was something simple, but I had to replace the engine.

I picked up a j4 unit for £190 delivered and then due to lack of time and space got it fitted by my local garage with timing belt kit etc etc so all in it cost me £950

If I had done the work myself it would have be much cheaper @£550 with service parts etc but I was a bit flush at the time.

Got one for £50 furio but had light front end damage so cold it and got a MINT 2001 desire 1.1 for £100 with tax and mot 60k on the clock full service history and it's just had a brand new rear beams, timing belt aux belt, lower arms, battery, wheel bearings and exhaust was shocked when I see the paper work that came with the car don't think il ever sell it purely because what I've paid and how good of a base it is aha, saxo's are at there lowest at the moment

I paid £375 for my current VTR off a lad on here as you see it in the picture. 61K, cambelt, clutch, 7 months test and no problems.

    Yes they are that cheap.
If your uncle got a grand for a VTR he got a very very good price; of the last 10 to sell on ebay none have been over £600

I would give yours a good detail, service it and replace anything it needs. Decide if you like saxos and save for a VTR/S/106GTI or something different.

Want it to be nippy, put a VTR engine in it.
But dont bother doing anything to it, aftermarket bits wont make a scrap of difference.

Sorry mate, I'll take it off for you if it offends you that much! Must be so amazing being you... All cool and what not

thats fair enough for £375 quid. mine came with tsw allows which i promtly sold for a different set... made £65 profit in terms of alloys

but anyways, ive had several answers, and the jist of what is being said is to just get the vtr engine (or vts), correct? or just buy a vtr/vts?

although there are definitely mods to make, i shouldnt really bother with doing anything to the 1.1, save my pennies for the better engine?
