BOOST Advice

  1. #1
    Hi guys

Im looking to generate a boost engine.

What I am aiming for -

    250-300bhp

Something to whip about town and have fun doing most things about.

    What it needs to be!

    - Drivable!

What I have so far -

    Head & bottom end

What are the MUSTS I should be installing in this engine to get the figures I am looking at?

I plan to reuse valves + springs etc

I am looking for Cam information and internals etc

I'm thinking for those figures you'll need to go fully forged for reliability.

Lower compression, standalone ecu,the turbo itself etc etc.

I'd have a wee nosey at the spec of others on here to give you a good idea,a base to start from.

Also have a look at what's available on kamracing's website and the likes, gives you an idea on price and what options you have.

Was going to go standard rods but forged pistons

    Forged pistons, standard rods
    Gt28rs turbo
    Arp rod bolts
    Rebuilding bottom end?
    Standalone
    Dp style manifold?
    Assuming its a 16v head. J4, jp4?
    660cc injectors possibly
Probably looking at a BE box with that power too if you want reliability.

All I can think of atm.

I wouldn't say 300bhp is something to just "whip about town" in

    Me either tbh lol..
Ive just done mine and it is plenty quick enough round town.
Ive not been on a RR yet but guessing its around 160-180 bhp

Well with the engine out the car I would rather build it to a decent spec to get these sort of figures, even if it is a weekend warrior

Will be great fun with that power

This was my plan with the spare engine I have out back, would be plenty fun with a safe power output.

With drive ability being a key part of your criteria surely you'll suffer massive torque steer sending 300hp to the front wheels? And you wont be able to go full chat until mid 3rd gear onwards you'll definitely need an uprated differential aswell as the be gearbox - just a thought

For transmission I was going for BE box and LSD x

Go supercharged if this is going to remain a road car. 250bhp or thereabout will be cheaper, far more reliable, and ultimately "nicer" to drive.

For a *real* 300hp you'll need to get your wallet out.

    BE4 + diff
    ECU + wiring + mapping
Pistons + rods (you said reliable)
    Turbo (GT28RS is outside it's island at 300hp - try a GTX2863)
    Ideally you'll want a different inlet - C2 etc
    Fuel setup - 255/044 + injectors
Ignition - ford coilpack + leads is cheapest, + plugs
    Ideally breather setup.
Diesel rad if money running out, or GMC/Pro-Alloy (+ header tank).
    Oil coolant (13 row min)
Exhaust (2.5" full system, inc downpipe minimum)
    Exhaust manifold.
Misc boost pipes/intercooler/fittings/clamps etc. These add up to a staggering amount.

You can probably get 250bhp supercharged for 2/3 of the cost of 300hp turbo'd, and have a far more drivable car that in the real world, would eat a 300hp turbo for breakfast just down to drivability.

    Words of Wisdom!

But Ross, I need that turbo sound and powerrrrr

    Edit -

Ross if you was building for 250 what would you change?

If I were starting over with what I now know, I'd not have the DP inlet and exhaust - cost vs performance there's better ways to spend your money. I'd stick probably with my first (280hp) setup and wasn't especially expensive to be fair. It was mighty and a laugh a minute. More power than that and it's fun, but in a "fuck it wants to kill me" way not just pleasure

Turbo wise something *like* a gt2854r - fast smooth spool but will max out at about 270-280hp - if you're confident you'd not want more than 250hp this is a good little turbo. Spools very quick, even on a little 1.6 engine.

For 250hp starting from scratch I'd honestly go SC. If I was determined to go turbo, I'd go forged pistons, standard rods, arp rod bolts (standard head bolts).

With careful purchases and lack of bling, you could get 250hp for around £2-2.5k or thereabouts.
