Overheating

I opened a thread last week as I thought my head gasket was going but I'm back for more advice. When the car was overheating I put a bit of water into the radiator and it didn't make much difference, the car still overheated and was idling badly. I went out this morning and was able to put a big jug of water into the radiator, since then the temperature guage hasn't passed 90º (half-way) l, was the water just too low?

Need to ask yourself why the level dropped so much in the first place

I've only had the car over a month so not sure if water was low when I got it. I have checked the radiator for leeks but nothing?

    Usual checks.....

Does the blower blow hot consistently when the temp is up?

Any signs of water in the oil, dipstick, oil filler cap?

    Does the temp fluctuate?

As above if the water was that low then why was it that low........

If I were you I'd flush the system and fill up with 50/50 water-antifreeze and keep an eye on it.

    Also does the fan work?

Yeah the blower works - blows hot and cold so no bother with that

Temperature was going up and down but that's when the water was low I'm assuming - temperature is staying around the same now since filling the radiator
