Pulley adjusting

  1. #1
Ok so my car is on the road but it isn't as fast as it should be I don't think. My mate has an 11 plate, 1.4 Ibiza with 83bhp and when he's got 4 people in and I'm on my own, he matches me to 60 then after that I slowly pull away but surely I should be creaming him?!
So I'm wondering if I tinker about with my adjustable pulley whether I can not necessarily get more power but whether some of the power is at 7000rpm, ie not accessible because my limiter is at 6250, so can I bring it down a bit?
Does advancing make the power band higher revs and retard lower or how does it work? Cheers!

1st thing i'd ask is if the car is mapped?

Nah not really. It's 8v innit

Havent you already faffed about with that before and almost ruined it??

Running the cam so advanced last time are you sure you've not bent some valves? You'll be down on compression if so hence not much power

Valves seem all ok, adjusted te tappets to correct measurements today and sounds and goes better but still not sure it's at what it should be. I'll try tweaking the timing a degree or 2 and just see if it's the timing out by a degree or 2 and see what I can do with it

    Do a compression test.

Did you adjust the tappets with engine stone cold?

Had been about an hour since I drove it. Was cold enough to touch with bare hands etc

Needs to be STONE cold. not even slightly warm.

    Valves will still be hot

Do it first thing in the morning, or after about 6-8 hours.

Also, get a compression test done. If you have the tools, do a leak down test as well.

The standard VTR gearbox is SHIT ratios, it's the same as the 1.5d box, in fact the 1.5d has shorter first and second gear
