Track car exhaust replacement

  1. #1
I'm in need of a new exhaust system from de-cat pipe backwards for my track VTS.
The current system is scorpion made with a standard CAT. However lately the noise has been creeping up above 88dbA so on my last track day at croft I had to use an exhaust bung. I suspect the back box and/or Cat are on there way out.

Just looking for some advice on an exhaust system to use that will be below the 88dbA limit, maybe a system that someone has had experience of? I will be removing the cat and fitting a de-cat pipe.

    Cheers

Magnex is good mate, got a raceland 4-2-1, de-cat, Magnex center silencer and back box on my vts, it sounds aswome but its not that loud to make your ears bleed !

As above I also have a magnex backbox on the VTR. I have a 4-2-1 and a Supersprint center pipe, it was about 75dB at Oulton Park.
On the downside the magnex backboxes are quite heavy.

    pugsport/saxsport ?

To completely disagree with the above, MuZiZZle previously ran a centre silenced Magnex system with a decat and Piper Manifold, and we were black flagged at FCS for 105db on drive by.

He has a SaxSport on now, which is utterly bizarre, despite being louder to the ear, it literally flies through sound tests. We've tested it with a DB meter and the sound level drops off as you rev higher, it flows very well.

Never had any issues with the magnex as they are known to be the quietest exhaust.

I am not sure why you were black flagged, probably many variables but I have never had any issues at brands hatch, Silverstone, rockingham, cadwell, llandow, Oldham, croft, Bedford, combe, goodwood or oulton park etc

    were you decat?

I am indeed. but a standard manifold mated to the decat > mid box > rear box

was muz on bodies or anything?

How odd, nah not at all, he's cammed but unmapped, Piper manifold - decat pipe - centre silencer - backbox with 3" exit.

We scraped through the static by about 2db, and got black flagged 2nd lap. Had to short shift the rest of the day.

the tester was obviously in a bad mood that day

Had a 421 then a 2 inch pipe into a back box with twin 3inch exits. Had no track issues with that car lol

I've been looking at the saxsport systems, relatively cheap and seem to be well made also.

The system I've been looking at is the decat system with centre silencer and 2" race backbox but again unsure on the systems noise. I just don't want the hassle of having to buy another silencer to weld in meaning more restriction.

My car is running a 4-2-1 manifold (not sure on make), cammed and a 3" cold air feed through the headlight.

    Cheers

btb if you can find one, 3 boxes, built to last, good for boost if you ever do, holds its value and most importantly pretty quiet!

I'd do you a video but it probably wouldn't pick it up correctly, it's bizarre as D4 says, we used a shit hot pro DB meter too, it idles loud then once it gets load the noise just drops, much like fucking Brets mam

The Saxsport is loud. Depending on the circuit it certainly will have issues with noise control. We had loads of enquiries on how to sort these systems (as well as single box Supersprints) when we were at Donington FCS a few years back.

You will need a twin box system for the VTS if you want to do a large variety of circuits in the uk. The magnex full system should be quiet but its not the best flowing.

    Cherry bomb is needed.

WTF is going on with mine then?

your wadding could have gone. We had a car here that burnt all its wadding into a small hard lump the size of a 50p. Its now an ornament on one of our shelves lol. I dont know what grade of wadding is fitted to a magnex but it may not cope with high exhaust temperatures or a rich fuel mixture if its igniting in the exhaust system.

I mean my saxsport being quiet

What's it registering on the db meter and what engine mods you have?

Piper manifold, piper cams, decat 2" saxsport, CDA, unmapped at 141bhp

It makes 89 at idle dropping to 80ish at 4,500rpm

    It's random.

Next time it's MOT'd I'll get a vid with the db meter, it's bizarre. Totally drops off under load. We were black flagged with the magnex and we've never had a problem with the saxsport yet, knockhill, Caldwell, castle
Combe etc. It's definitely not loud.

Also I've had the saxsport from new, it did 5k on my car and then it's maybe done 2k max on chris' since

I wonder if they have a more road focused backbox then for the saxsport vs the pugsport. Different tailpipe sizes make a difference to harmonics, even things like tailpipe angle can affect if the trackside meters get tripped.

The road saxsport backbox is a 3 inch whereas the race spec Saxsport I'm thinking of buying is a 2 inch rolled.
    Still stuck on this!
I've got 2 weeks to decide and buy it, while the cars away getting the roll cage fitted. Decisions decisions!
