Got a 04 vauxhall vectra...The brake pad wear indicator came on 2 days ago...i've booked it into the garage to be replaced, quoted £206 inc vat +labour+ parts just for the front 2 pads and discs... My question is how can i tell if the discs need replacing? they still look quite thick to me but im not sure if thats how you can tell if they are worn or not... If i can get away with only replacing pads that could save me a good lump of £££ thanks.

#2First off take it to another garage, that is a rip off price and the job is doable yourself.

#3Really? brake discs, £40ish x2, pads £20ish x2, Labour £60+VAT comes in at £206. Looked on eurocarparts and the prices for the parts are pretty much the same as the quote (thats for Bosch discs and pads rather than the cheap ones) Also not a chance I could change the brakes my self..

#4Check out carpartsforless you'll get them cheaper plus free delivery. Google a discount code as well you can usually get a 10% one.
Got to remember places usually mark parts up a little.

#7Find out the min thickness of the discs. You can find this stamped on the disc itself or ring your local dealer. Measure the disc thickness and you will know. Below min thickness then replace. If they measure the min thickness or above then they should be good for a further set of pads.1 user thanked this post:

If you can jack the car up, take a wheel off and measure the discs then you will be able to change the discs and pads!
It's only 4 more bolts...undo caliper and take it off, take off the caliper bracket with 2 more bolts and the disc will probably fall off, new disc on, caliper bracket on, slots new pads into their holder, caliper on and done! -
#9You make it sound so easy but Im just not confident in doing it my self.Quote:If you can jack the car up, take a wheel off and measure the discs then you will be able to change the discs and pads!

Is Pagid a bad choise to go for? as its more than half the price of Bosch -

It is easy! Have you got someone, a mate who could maybe come give you a hand if you're really not that confident? But once you've done it once, you'll feel confident enough to do it again!
And Pagid and Bosch are both good manufacturers so go with whichever is cheapest!1 user thanked this post: -
