Driveshaft Queries

    Morning,

I need to replace the two driveshafts one the VTS. Are these the ones im after? As i know there are 2 variations?

    As for replacing them.

Is it a case of jacking up the car, onto stands one wishbones.

Taking off the wheel (32mm nut) and the lower wishbone bolt on the strut, that should tilt and slide out.

Then slide it out of the gearbox and drain the gearbox (Going to add some new oil)

Then do the reverse with the new one?

This a hard job and have i missed anything?

    cheers

Yes that's the right one if you have a MK2 VTS (which will have tapered shafts).

IMO you don't want to put the axle stands under the wishbone as it's going to need some movement to to separate the ball boing from the strut.

    I'd:

    Drain the box
    Jack the car up
    Remove wheels
    Remove drive shaft nut
    Remove pinch bolt
Separate the ball from the strut

As your changing the O/S (long shaft) you need to undo the bolts with the little cam shape at one end so you can separate the bearing from the housing. These can sometimes be a pain and it could be easier for you to remove the whole bracket from the back of the block to separate the bearing. If you do this you need to fit the bracket without the new shaft in.

Then refit and top up with oil.

Im replacing both shafts mate! so no stands under wishbones, thats fine.

As for the correct ones, mines a VTS mk2 but i have a single plug ECU (So crossover year) would they still need to be tapered?

Are you talking about the intermediate bearing? I never knew that the saxos had them, or that they disconnected from the shaft.

Which bracket are you talking about?

Ah so the bearing attaches to the block with a bearing because it is longer? that correct as it needs extra support?

With it being a single plug mk2 it could be either shafts, you'd be better off checking first.

The short shaft just pops out no problem and it's easy to do.

There's a bracket on the back of the block which the shaft goes through and the bearing half way up the shaft sits in it (don't know the correct name).

It should slide out in theory, but I went to take one out last week and it was stuck solid in the bracket so it had to come off. But this was a knacker of a motor.

Someone will be able to advise you better on which shafts but with it being crossover it could be either.

If you order before 12 with J&R they do next day delivery. You could strip them, see which ones you need then refit the next day.

ah right, mine have been changed a couple of times so hopefully they wont be stuck.

Yeah J&R are who im looking at on ebay, do they offer next day on ebay? as they are advising that if i ordered today that they wouldnt be delivered until next wednesday?

I've never had one just slide out. Usually involves some heat and a big hammer to get it out the carried.
