Full Engine Rebuild, Advice

  1. #1
Well my engine mount failed latter part of this week and took out my cambelt, so i'm building up one of my spare engines so far my list of work is as follows:

    Block
    - Complete Chemical Clean & Exterior Clean Intensively Blast if possible. (Oil ways and water ways)
    - Clean Bores run hone down if required
    - Clean Piston Faces
    - Deck/Skim Block faces
    - Line Bore Crank journals
    - Lighten & balance Flywheel
    - Match Rods
    - Balance Flywheel, New Clutch, Crank, Rods
    - Bottom End Assembly?
    Head
    - Port Exhaust side
    - Match inlets
    - Clean re cut valve seats
    - Skim head
    - Full Chemical Clean
    - New Valve Stems
    Parts
    - Valve Stem oil Seals
    - All Shells
    - Complete Gasket Set
    - ARP Conrod bolts
    - Piston Rings
    - Cam Seals
    - Head bolts
    - New Oil Pump
    - Little Ends? (Check Gudgen Pin)
    - Exhaust Studs

Some are just notes for engineering shop, I had considered removing ARP bolts from the list because of the price of forged conrods (are they any good?? I haven't followed up some of the threads on them) eg.
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/for-Citroe...item3391c8c65f
But then Pistons. . . . Forged High Comps seem to be £500 mark and obvs need Ph4 or similar to maximize, and i don't need that sort of power. and PH4's on a road car. . . .so no point having high comp pistons, and i shouldn't be needing the rods anyway?

any advice on where to get the bits also would be handy thanks

I read a post on the web about piston and rod choices of a very well known psa engine builder this was posted by a third party not by the engine builder.
He had his own pistons specialy made because of issuses with off the shelf forged pistons and he would not use cheap forged rods over standard rods.
Engine parts uk Ltd is very reasonable for parts and stock loads of brands including race bearings and glyco aka federal mogul which are oem.

    Water pump??

What's engine going to be used for??? As this can determine a spec!

Thermostat and oilpump drive chain and crank seals + engine assembly paste +plastiguage and rtv lk(loctite 5920 is very good available at halfords to).

Sounds like possibly one of my posts after talking to Sandy.

ARP would not be his first choice I believe either, a fresh set of std bolts suffice for many builds, especially if standard rods are used.

I didn't think i need to put that sort of stuff on that goes without saying, thats more ancillaries, water pump cambelt kit & tensioners etc

Will stick to OEM thanks for the parts link

    Thermostat-ancillaries

Crank seals etc will be in the complete gasket set, of course the other disposables but not counting them atm.

Will be just a road engine with cams, its in a 106 RG so its 825kg standard, so don't need massive power just want a healthy engine to start with maybe eventually go down Predator and ITb route but more looking for things i can maximise performance and reliability while everything is apart ie, Luthor saying about porting exhaust side can gain 10%.

unless your revving the nuts of it, shouldnt need arp rod bolts, although i would seeming as it's a bit of insurance, i would imagine the limiter wont be standard for long?

which will tail off at about 7800-8000 for the cost of Forged pistons, ARP bolts, Solid lifters, double valve springs etc etc all for a few more RPM.

Standard motor with minor tweeks will be plenty enough, Its only a road car not my competition car.

arp bolts and tidy bottom end bearings, and some decent valve spring and it should be good for 8k rpm, i personally wouldnt trust oe rod bolts at them revs, but im prepared to be proven wrong.
