Engine replacement

  1. #1
    Hi,

Am I right in thinking I can put any gti/vts engine into my gti? The current engine is complete and in the car but it has a huge hole in the front!

Or do I have to get the correct year/ecu plug things? This is an X reg/2000. Just want to know the easiest/most cost effective way of doing it.

    Thanks for any help

Yes, any 16v should fit, but with a later engine you may have to swop sensors over from the old one!

You could consider a JP4 (later 16v) fitted to C2, 206 etc.... as these are lower mileage/newer - but then more work is needed!

Cheers! So I needn't worry about getting the right year engine then!

Yep I was just about to add to my first post about the JP/JP4 compatibility. So if I was to find a JP4 engine, how much work would need doing? I'll be getting someone else to do the work for me, as I'm pretty incapable of things like this.

And roughly, how many hours labour am I looking at for someone to remove and refit a new engine?

    Thanks again

A like for like engine swap should take 8 hours or less.

If you cant do it yourself dont get a Jp4, would be best just to get a j4 and swap it right over.

Ok, that's great. I'll stick with the J4 then. So pretty much any year will be fine?

I have someone local who knows 106's like the back of his hand so I'm going to ask him to do it I think. I was going to have a go myself but I reckon it's well out of my league! I have the time but not the knowledge or tools.

Also, when buying/viewing an engine, what key things should I be looking for? I see prices start at £200 for a standard engine but that goes right up to £500+ for cammed lump!

Whilst the engine is out it's best to do cam belt, water pump etc! As access is much easier!

Try to buy one you can see running if not get one as local as possible with a warranty so if there are any issues you can return it as some breakers have been known to piss people about.
Veiwing essential as a lot of second hand engines are left out for months with no cover from the weather and some had manifolds or injectors removed and had water or sand insiside.
Remove the oil cap check the oil looks clean have a look at the coolant, check for excessive endfloat turn the flywheel make sure it is not seized.
Ask for paperwork or to veiw the donor car.
Quite a few breakers will spin the bs saying it's fully tested and has no faults or is low milage so be very careful.

    Thanks

I've been looking on ebay but some look really rusted. I don't think I'd buy one in that sort of condition.

I may try to remove the engine myself to save some costs, as I've got loads of free time. Am I right in thinking just disconnect everything you can see, then it's just the driveshafts and engine mounts and it should come out? Will a Haynes manual explain everything?

Basicly yes drain all the fluids first and remove the bumper, slam panel and radiator.
If you don't have an engine crane get an old scaffold bar some good rope or old seatbelt and a few mates to lift it out.

Hmm might possibly give it a go then!

Just unsure about finding an engine. There's some cheaper ones like:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-10...item58b5de52f3

or could go all out and spend £500+ on a cammed lump like:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/106-Gti-jp...item23418ebab4

It's a JP4 which I don't really want, but obviously it'll be a better engine. Going to have to have a good think about things!
