excessive play with gearstick

   hey gents i have a 2002 vtr and there is some excessive play in the gearstick even when the stick is in gear. any ideas? im putting it down to having 120k on the clock and bushes etc being tired, what can i change to fix it??

   Replace the 3 linkages first. Either metal or OEM. OEM is more than enough for a road car, after all they take like 100k to wear out.
   
   Next is the "gear selector controller" which has a rubber ball on it.
   
   Then there's the 2 nylon bushes at the base of the gearstick under the car
   
   There is also a cotter pin on the gearbox which can wear. Your "long" gear linkage clips onto this, the pin goes through the arm on the gearbox itself.

   Replace the pin first that's cheapest to start with, something like 30p from the dealers
