mazda rx 8 (231)

  1. #1
well time had come to sell up the saxo and grow up a lil to a family car (so my mrs thinks) so wanted one of these for a while had one years back and wanted another, test drove 5-6 over the last few weeks and none gave me that feeling till this one, one owner from new an enthusiast. body work spot on, inside spot on. and all other thing amazing just needs coils changing for the just incase.

  2. #2
Looks good mate like rx8's, running costs and engine issues have always managed to put me off though.
  3. #3
Let me know when you buys it so I can get some shares sorted in Castrol.

    Cheers.
  4. #4
    I like them and i don't.

Are these as bad as made out with the engine rebuilds/costs?
  5. #5
I'm on like 4 different rx8 forums and I think they are myths bout these cars. Lots that have been looked after are fine they do need a lil more care that piston engines but the fun part is red lining the revs for best performance and coils need replacing every 16k miles but other than that most is standard stuff. Can't wait to mod it a bit, new wheels and backbox. But my 45 min test drive was lovely nice stretch of straight road and hard throttle foot

I would guess not now. When the problems first came out yes but theres more company's out there able to sort rotor engines out. Seen few threads being quotes 1-2300 for a new engine with insulted tips and they were few years old so could be alot cheaper now.

Basically I've bitten the bullet and gone for one for better or worse if it goes up shitter fair do's if it don't then I shall smile my ass off as I drive it with my heated up arse

Nice car my old mans got one, they have a bad name but its from people who dont own them but think they are experts on them.

One thing I will say though is they drink fuel like there is no tommorow

yeap at best I think it is 21-25mpg
and gets worse come service time is something is playing up, its a good job rx8 forums have nearly every type of diy guide going to help save some pennys to spend on petrol
  11. #11
Yeah I like them, had mine for 4 months there just got rid this week.

Was a great car, went through an incredible amount of fuel though

Wish I had seen this earlier I had some genuine coils leads an plugs for sale!
  12. #12
ive just purchased the upgraded coils n leads bout half hour ago, now seeing what started motor to maybe upgrade too but don't think it needs it yet
  13. #13
You should get a Varta E23 battery for it aswell

My pal had one and it cost him nothing to run and didn't use much oil, just saying

They sound like they have the oil consumption and MPG of mine
  17. #17
end of the day all cars have horror stories its just the rotary engine ones have stuck more as most don't know how to use them compared to piston engines.
saxos dont haven't the most reliable of reps but mine I owned for 7 years with minimal problemsgotta hope mazda follow suit
  18. #18
I'm seriously considering picking one up on the trade auctions to do a few drift days in.
Personally I think you have to treat it like a 1.3 engine running 230bhp. Its like a highly strung piston engine and needs more looking after and has a shorter lifespan than an engine designed for going up to the shops.

See I dunno, most things I read up on basically pointed towards making sure coils are good and Def oem mazda to keep engine good, keep mineral oil topped up to keep it all good and these make engine happy and run for years and final check is keep on top of cooling stuff. The best site is Def the American rx8 owners with all info on race and drift.

Plus if your looking for cheap ones plenty available everywhere. Was a 06 up here for 1500 with nothing on clock really and good nick just road tax (500) puts alot off
  20. #20
Always fancied 1 of these and after selling my last 2 cars I've looked at RX8s but never had the balls to go ahead and buy 1.

What is it that actually causes the rotor tips to wear and loose compression? Also, say you buy a good 1, what's the chances of it going tits up a week later? From what I read it's inevitable that they will eventually fuk up. What sort of preventative maintenance can be done? Price wise they are all over the place. 2 like for like low mileage, good history cars can be priced from £1200 up to £3k so what's the price difference actually mean.

Seriously tempted to punt my Gti 180 and bite the bullet.
  21. #21
from what ive read up on, the wear is caused by prev owners who drive them like piston engines. they need high revs when warm, the correct oil, and basically drive em hard to clear the carbon builds. its also to do with spark plugs and coils, as coils die (20-30,000 miles)quickly die to their placement so once they start to go it puts stress on the start ups which eventually kills the tips.
from what ive read up on you can get tips insulated which makes them harder wearing, rebuilds are around £1-2000 quid ish. and you need to keep an eye on cooling system hose.
as for the price, ive found most are all around £1-1900 oviously paying lil more for good ones. the newer versions after 2005 pay £500+ road tax so their prices are lot less. as for trying to find one that wont fuck up get a hot compression test done. apparently there are a lot of tell signs its on its way out like the hot start issue, accompanied by other stuff. I tried it on mine it was fine and also still pulls like a train, no idle problem. but am scared of compression test.
new buyers no matter what prev owners says are advised to change coils and leads as soon as you get it for peace of mind. other than that search rx8club/owners forums there is literally hours n hours of read for new owners.

like I said above I took a punt, the 4 forums im on have several examples of engines that are on 100k+ and still good.
  22. #22
Is it essential for them to be up to temp before switching them off (and holding the revs up high) and how long does it take to be up to temp? It would be used for work which is about 1.5mile away (bearing in mind I always let the car idle for a few minutes when cold before setting off).

Is it also true the hot start issue can be hidden to some extent by fitting the uprated starter motor?

And realistically what sort of mpg do they do on short stop start journeys? I'm not too fussed on mpg as my previous Vectra done around 19mpg average.
  23. #23
from what I have read yes if you switch it off before its hot, too much unused fuel gets pumped in to the chamber and causes flooding another wear on the engine. doesn't take long to get to temp probs switch on to temp around 5 mins or so. and the whole rev it to 3-4000revs before switching it off is a big argument point on forums as some says its best to do it others say its a myth and they've never done it. its the same as premixing some do some don't argument follows.
and again from what I have read no it cant be hidden, fitting new starter from newer model will mean it just cranks quicker, older models crank a lil slower, so when its switched off and tried to turn on it will still take 5-10 sec to start if it starts. as the problem is it gets flooded and refuses to start.
haven't really driven it much but most say 19-24mpg is good. but as you need to redline on a daily basis your never gonna drive it conservatory. also it going less n less mpg is another sign of wearing parts.
  24. #24
I never held the revs before stopping mine, but you can't start the car cold an then turn it off yeah just floods the engine, it really doesn't take too long before you are able to switch it off though I would wait untill I seen the temperature needle move up abit.
Short journey for me gave around 17mpg on super unleaded

another argument to be had, the super unleaded vrs normal unleaded, some say super is better others say its the same for the engine so doesn't need to be used all time.
not joking spent most of my nights over last few weeks going through all info before taking plunge
  26. #26
What are they like performance wise? They say the 192 is more torquey than the 231. Do they feel quick?
  27. #27
231 pulls like a train and being able to go up to 8k on revs helps more. But Tuesday is motorway day to work so will see how 70mph feels;-)
  28. #28
Yeah I could feel an hear the car run better on super than normal unleaded and I've never had that on any of my other cars
  29. #29

gonna prob do as I do with the saxo 3 out of four fill use normal then forth use super, or maybe two normal two super. say all the reading up the rotarys should like the super more as it has more additives in supposedly clean the carbon and all other stuff off better with the heat? but like I say the arguments continue on the forum over if there are benefits or not.
  30. #30
I just didn't like the way it ran on normal unleaded an super wasn't that more expensive near me so just went with it

The oil supposedly takes awhile to heat up because of the two oil coolers in the front bumper heard of people blocking one off so it doesn't get air about it.
When doin oil changes aswell the oil in the coolers doesn't get drained which was annoying
  31. #31
Well saying that the diy guides all say jack car up one side and drain then jack other side and drain so I guessed it was for that reason maybe not tho

You want to get that looked at!
Mine doesn't start beeping at me till 9k!!

Yes they need high revs, a bit of pre mix helps.
Don't buy eBay coils as most are fakes, and the ones Ecp gsf sell arnt up to the job

Mazda type c ones or after market kits by rotary revs

Oil it uses good old mineral oil

Mpg wise best I've had is 22mpg on a long run , normally get around 1mpg

Next up on mine are braided clutch and brakelines
  33. #33

got on with few jobs today as had a spare day coils n leads and rear lights were first on the list, closely followed by coolant and oil top ups. cleaned interior and waiting on service parts on Monday. but only tidied up the outside in places.

  42. #42
Love the interior of these things!

comfy as fook too. the drive position is just perfect for me. saxo was nice with the buckets I had but to sit it this a drive for a few hours is just like the comfy chair at home
  44. #44
One of my friends had one, and it was really nice to be in, the sound they make is cool too!

need a new backbox to make the sounds even better. but I cant say ive ever enjoyed a car more to drive.
touch wood I think its a good example, that won't let me down.
  46. #46
had new coils n leads fitted today and what a difference they make. starts amazingly fast. next is performance air filter, pollen filer and hopefully backbox
  47. #47
today all my stuff arrived, so first off was pain in arse k&n air filter. then came pollen filter and new lid as snapped other one.
removed rear exhaust shrouds for a quick spray as they were grey

    then back on car

needs new exhaust as old one is rusty as hell

then tinted new rear lights and sorted the condensation out

also got hold of a new flip key and programmed it to car and it works, so now need blade cutting and that's sorted.
  48. #48
managed to get hold of a flip key, and needed it programming to car for remote and coding, then new blade, ordered blade and waited.
while I waited programmed remote to car, blade turned up so got it cut, came home and programmed code to use key. bang one flip key.

  49. #49
cracked on today, first with nitro fill on tires, k&n panel filter, and adding the minor bit to the car.

    new number plate, smoked rears

    smoked side repeaters

  50. #50
another half productive day, managed to get front number plate off ready for relocating, tomorrow. then started to clean her a lil then thought I'd try polish my exhaust up......bad idea polished a whole 2cm square then it went very loose, and fell off. backbox has rusted to fook. this now gives me the chance to buy a new stainless box.

also ordered a second set calipers all round to paint and refurb, as well as braided lines, new discs n pads all round. love my car but bank balance doesn't love me!!
  51. #51
relocating the plate so it's more JDM as fuck
  52. #52

plate relocated. was quite happy with this until took a trip to Halfords for some bit and someone decided to drive into my rear and mangled the rear arch and door

I am interested in the car, which is why I want to see the damage.

I'm totally like "OH LOOK, damage and there's an rx8 attached to it!"
    I think not.
  59. #59
bit pissed but damage aint as bad as first thought but still don't look good

and another angle on the front plate

  60. #60
Not too bad... it could be worse.
  61. #61
I know just pissed it got key'd then driven into. I know it don't look bad but it'll bug me till its fixed. Not going through insurance as that was a joke so gonna start saving.
Ordered a new backbox too as that decided to fall off as rust had eaten it through, good excuse for a stainless tho
  62. #62
ok still not seen a body shop bout damage but its on the list...

so far things are now turning up thick and fast...

first off caliper paint, new braided line in orange

second.. mesh for oil cooler mod

and the start of the new clean white leds

  63. #63
    today been brill couriers galore.....

    battery

    crest needs some polishing out

new tires. must recommend camskills.co.uk by undercutting everyone elses price massively

me lil one thinking its her new toys

lastly my new exhaust all shiney and new

  64. #64
handling of the car has changed so much for the better now, tires fitted that was a pain in arse, new backbox on. and today changed most of the interior lights to fresh white leds.
next is to tackle the calipers as they turned up today paint refurb and stick on with new lines and discs n pads all round. coming along nicely now.
  65. #65
right all coming along nicely now, nearly booked in for repair damage. and managed to fit all new white LED's except front sidelights.

exhaust is still sooting up so still isn't that loud which is a good thing I guess but sounds good on the revs which is all that matters
  66. #66
well I thought to myself I have a spare 20mins before needing to go out, i'll replace them sidelights, wow pass side done few seconds, drivers side lil more effort, ok done.....until I heard a pingk.... bloody led had fallen out of the holder and rattling around in my headlight!!!!! so drop the bumper in freezing conditions, took some time then off with headlight!!! then all back together all in all 3hrs. what a faff
but does now match att the hids in the car.
still to refurb the brakes and lines and order then new discs n pads then I think I'm done for a lil while as bank balance needs to recover
  67. #67
Well I finished work last night and as most people were already finished and prob enjoying themselves the road was empty, so thought lovely a spirited drive ...... But then disaster struck the cat shat itself across the road and was stuck only able to do 6.5k revs so that was the end of that spirited drive. Came home read up, basically my cats on its way out so is now blocked which means cars fubar'd to drive excitedly. But has given opportunity for a new stainless sports cat. Now hopefully it's the last of the stuff to go wrong can't afford much more.
  68. #68
my brother had one of these , he had no troubles but only had it a few months , unsure which engine he had but it went like fook
  69. #69
Same I had one a few years back only had it for a summer poss 3-4 months then got rid but I had to get another.
The American rx forum seems to state silver rexs seem to be the most cursed out of them all. Fingers crossed bad luck has ended as put too much money into this now to quit
  70. #70
well today was a long wait as couriers seemed to be on a late run to the house but finally at 4;30 these gems arrived

stainless sport cat and fitting fit

    and new magnetic sump plug

still have battery to fit, crest to clean up and brakes to start refurbing and painting as well as all new discs and pads all round to fit.
  71. #71
ok today I finally got round to doing full oil change to premium 10w-40 oil new filter and magnetic sump plug fitted. boom first on list

second sports cat fitted. my god it sounds amazing, quiet subdued on idle and low revs perfect for neighbours and put your foot down and hear the roar and the sound of the gods.

next is calipers, lines and discs n pads all round with something a lil special
  72. #72
well after the first real oil change today was secondary change to make sure its all done now, so now thats off the list sorted a new side mirror after smashing the last one.
spent the day decorating the house and in between drying cracked on was hand polishing the crest looks miles better than when I received it.

and a shot I just like

and these little beauties are hopefully next on the list, then match them to the refurbed calipers

  73. #73
Love these cars but would be scared to own one tbh progress is coming on well though.

its like most stories come from those who have no idea bout them and how to use them.
I had no idea bout them till I went on all the forums. I know since I got it a few bit have gone wrong but its only been exhaust stuff and minor items that I would class as wear n tear. mechanically its sound and the joy it gives on a empty bypass is amazing.
  75. #75
a few clean n shiney pics finally got round to giving her a good clean after 3 months

tried fitting crest but failed so back to the drawing board
  76. #76
finally fitted my new battery and reset the ecu and all the other bits that need to be done. still on for discs and pads as bank balance still isn't up to it. and found a place to clean up my calipers ready for their refurb.
and still need to save for the damage to be resprayed. other than that I want some new rims which are £500 and to top the system a stainless manifold. still scared to get a compression test but need one to know whats happening altho all feels good. and need to put a video up of the backbox as it sounds so good. things keep going up in rx forums forsale sections that I want as need ot get it lowered but again funds are limited. need a lotto win
  77. #77
had these little beauties arrive today dunno when I;m gonna get round to fitting them

    1

and just to prove everyone wrong including mrs its a family car

    buggy n stuff

    and baby recaro

  78. #78
first off finally got a lil video of the sounds

second found a break in the third brake light wiring so quick tear out and a re wire and all working again

again still need discs and pads but moneys a lil tight to mention
  79. #79
had a steering issue where needed car up on axle stands to clean lube and then re grease the steering joint. that worked perfect, and adjusted handbrake while I was there. need to paint up calipers but need little better weather as still bit cold.

there's one around the block here, going for 800. Looks ok, but it's not selling, obviously 500 tax, same insurance group as an m3, 20mpg, drinks oil and a bad reputation. At 800 quid I was wondering what's wrong with it.
  81. #81
Bad rep puts alot off. If you decide for yourself there are worse cars out there. I love mine apart from the mpg at times but sod it it's a fun drive
  82. #82
little update, final got new discs and pads today, gonna fit them a bit later...

and yesterday weather was good so cracked out the cleaning stuff..

also ordered uprated engine mounts which will be being put on in few weeks when I have more time off
  83. #83
bit of tarting up under the bonnet, before engine mounts go in and a few other bits...

next up is fit now sturdier engine mounts and find some more money for rest of plans
  84. #84
engine mounts arrived... fitting april when I got holiday

and ordered front and rear drop links as my rubbers don't look too good, so as wheels are off anyways may aswell replace

plan is to paint up calipers, and poss put on braided brake lines depending how confident I feel on the day
  85. #85
well as usual things didn't go quite as planned so started drivers side engine mount but nut got seized on and couldn't get the thing off, so had to order some new toys to be able to remove this stubborn sucka.
also wasn't in mood after struggling with that mount to do the drop links so just ended up painting calipers and as you can see I don't think I caw in correct mood for that either a lil sloppy with paint

    decals added

also started spraying up engine covers some more, but now they are sprayed I think I now need to do something with centre parts. thinking orange in the grooves to match??

the lastly sprayed window wipers as they were a bit tired and manky

ordered this catch tank to fit, it arrived but no one was in and some orange hose.

next plans are to sort engine mount and replace drop links. in aug get body work sorted out. and hopefully inbetween times get some lowering springs to get the height looking better. and if the wheels I want should appear well happy days
  86. #86
new grills arrived ready for fitting. think their lockwood. either way they protect my radiator and oil coolers.

and catch tank all fitted with orange hosing

  87. #87
well finally after 6 hours the other day and a good 3-4 hours today this little bastard finally came free

which them allowed to me to finally replace engine mounts, then after an hour I managed to swap old for new.

so now new mounts are on no vibrations on idle and car feels new again.

managed to mount catch tank as well with this, its a lil tight to get too but does the job well

next up was drop the bumper and fit the lockwood oil cooler grills and lower rad grill, they are stainless but sprayed black as didn't like em silver

  88. #88
Found your thread at long last, i have to say i LOVE the engine bay.
  89. #89
I've done alot more since not updated in a while. Will try update bit more once coils are on and holiday out way
  90. #90

started premixing to hopefully help lube things up

new bhr 585 coils and magnecor 8mm leads pain to fit as very limited space so lost prob a whole pack on nuts on this job

reached the 300 mile club. actally it carried on to 326 miles to one full tank, but that was boring 65-72 mph drive on mototrway

  91. #91
done a hell of a lot to the car but just cant remember half of it nor find the pics.

    so had damage fixed finally

finally back to nice paint work

been toying with these mirrors for last few weeks on and off their mazspeed rep mirrors, or to most evo look-a-likes

still not 100% on colour but will fit and see and prob change to colour coded

then lastly I ordered some new suspension, new struts and lowering springs so arch gap should be closed up a little more

and new front end pic just cos it looks nice

been a busy few weeks with buying and fitting and work, managed to buy a nexus install

    started on front suspension

started rears but all went wrong and everything was seized, so off to mechanics Monday for rears, and drop links

also trial fitted the new side mirrors and think they need to be colour coded

grinder comes out for these bloody drop links

sadly once was off and all swapped over, sway bar was turned wrong way resulting in this

but ordered some new ones arrived day before my day off so rear jacked again and replaced

    and new on

so was able to drop down and see results 20mm drop sits perfect now I feel.

and a little sticker for the bay

    replaced front drop links too

after all the suspension fun I also managed to break the rear headlight sensor, usually they break on the silly flimsy arm as its lowered down but no this my work, it managed to break the silly free moving bolt to the rear of the sensor. thus making it an expensive fix as these sensors aren't cheap.

then a bit cosmetic work for interior as a new boot

Quick update. Well chuffed passed mot with flying colours after shitting it for a week. Did a oil change and then got car up on stands and undersealed the under side of car ready for winter.
Managed to also get a bargain on insurance too and now also save 12p a month on road tax so with the saved pennies this all goes toward some more toys. I fancy some new side skirts and a aem cold air feed when they pop up for the right money

finally got to add new gear knob, was ordered months and months ago but my ocd didn't like the way it fitted, so ordered a adaptor to bridge the gaitor to stalk think it looks ok

    and new club sticker

the engine on mine would not start if it was warm its hard to find a good one now on ebay as they need a engine rebuild at every 60k

    New silicon hose kit
New speakers to go in centre arm rest
    New spark plugs
    More oil changes
And some more new rear tyres. So old ones will get shredded off soon enough

Change of plans again, had to sell the aem cold air feed, and instead spend the money and some on replacing toe, camber and caster bolts and nuts and bushes. With labour and price of bolts n bushes I was nearly £600 out of pocket. Had full geometry sorted with 4 point lazor alignment and now car handles spot on again. So buying parts and toys is out for a while.
All I've managed to do is hardwire the Dam cam in and give a good wash and Polish inside and out. Replaced rear tyres, and now just enjoy driving her

Wow I bet that cold air feed wasn't cheap! No wonder you needed to sell it.

Pipe, couplings and a filter? Any decent fabricator can do that for less than a ton

Fabrication yes but all the mesh inserts to keep air flowing how stock does is where cost comes in. Only a good thing I got a bargain in it when I got it and sold it fir a better price

Been quite busy with work and family so things are slow very slow, but coming along slowly.

    New wheels

    custom centre caps

  108. #108
    New wheel bolts

Got spare bonnet so cutting these vents out

    And so it starts

And lil one playing with horn

  109. #109
Picked up these side skirts and rear spats for a steal bit unsure of the spats so may just got sides and see

  110. #110
Yet again another change of plans, sold on skirts and spats and opted for fitting new wheels but need arches rolled a touch, so a friend of a friend is helping out.

Decided to crack on with cutting bonnet as had a few days off work. Here's results.

Next will hopefully be wheels on and sorted on Thursday and then a minor service before trip back down south
  111. #111
Finally got new wheels fitted, first garage didn't help very much, so went somewhere that offered to roll arches if needs be, all tyres swapped car dropped down and no scrubbage or rubbage.
    Here's during fitting

    After fitting after drive home

Quite happy with result now, et 38 so bought wheels all way to arches and a lil dish.

Well from caliper seized again but this time wasn't peeing around with it, so bought a second hand set....

Very surprised what turned up, very little use and in pretty much brand new order all for £40 delivered. Amazed

Quick lick of paint to keep in with the theme

Next was the long project of the bonnet and what to do how to do and what did i actually like.
Now while cutting bonnet out I wasn't careful with what I was doing so totally scratched bonnet top, so wanted either spray Matt / satin black or wrap it. Decided to wrap it in 3d carbon fibre. Looked the nuts. Watched all the guides and decided to go for it.

Didn't turn out amazing but it's useable till I decide whether I like it. Back part I couldn't pull out the creases so gave up.

    Here's it fitted

  113. #113
Well the original red didn't match so a quick repaint to orange and all done

Next up is to repaint sump
Tackle air con and aux belts
    Finish the undersealing
And continue drive and enjoy the car
  114. #114
Had a few days off and managed to sort majority of jobs that needed doing.
First was fitting new aux and aircon belts, seemed easy till you need to empty the whole engine bay out to change them.
So took advantage of emptying out the bay and retrieved my 10mm spanner, cleaned up a few bits and then tried to reach the ssv, as been having a few issues. After several hours stripping back everything. Turns out this wasn't the issue. So all back together.
Greased uv joint free up steering again, undersealing all done, got a newer steering wheel fitted. New washer bottle as sensor had broke. Then thought I may as well clean air filter....... And found my issue...... The air filter was knackered and was basically getting sucked into the throttle thus starving my engine under heavy acceralation!! Wish I'd checked this sooner.

Only small updates at mo, new BMC filter fitted, and oil change. Sorted any rust in the bay with a lil clean and then a repaint in black satin. Had to replace boot struts as one gave way and a new boot seal as I'd tore the old one somehow.
Next job I'm considering cutting out the rear fake plastic mesh to open up and replace with real mesh to see the exhaust a bit but not 100% I like this idea.
