Hoffman Backbox

    Hello all,

Just a quickie, looking at adding a little sound to my new toy but don't have the funds available at the moment for a straight through exhaust system so I was hoping you guys could make some suggestions as to which back boxes are great value for money.

    I have a Saxo VTR Mk2 2002.

Came across this on eBay and was just wondering if anybody has one and would recommend it. Also from what I can gather it is just a straight swap for the stock standard back box which would be ideal as I can't be bothered to fork out for labour

    Cheers

Keep with the standard back box, with a aftermarket mid pipe without the middle silencer?
Maybe a sportex mid pipe if money is tight?

Then you get a nice subtle noise and no silly looking back box?

    Just a thought!

Personally, I like the noise the standard exhaust system makes, along with a un-resonated airbox. Subtle but nice

Is the hoffman exhaust stupid loud???

Personally I would wait and save funds for a good system. I'd recommend buying stainless steel as it won't rust so you will never need to replace it. Also better quality so greater performance increase.

Never had a hoffman or sportex but I can only presume they can be loud but perhaps not a good sound.

I have a kam racing backbox with a supersprint centre section with a standard cat fitted. Also a 4-2-1 mani. I really like the noise when accelerating and has a nice burble to it when you let off the gas. Its not overly loud so its not melting your eyes when your just driving along. Did have a magnex system before and that too sounded good but was much quieter.

I would look into magnex, supersprint, piper, kam racing, saxsport systems they can be quite pricey brand new but are well worth it. There are plenty of second hand options available for good prices, can often pick up a full stainless system from 50-150 depending on the brand.

If your unsure on the noise just search on youtube. Plenty of exhaust vids on there so you can get a rough idea on what noise you like before buying.

Yeah I think I'll save and perhaps go for a sportex system, I am in need of a new mani but I want to keep my cat so which would you recommend and where to purchase?

    Thanks

If you want to upgrade your manifold and keep a cat it's slightly awkward but not a major problem. As you have a mk2 vtr your cat is in the manifold. So fitting a 4-2-1 mani would de-cat your car.

You will need to fit a mk1 vtr system as they have under floor cats. This will mean you will need to fit a mk1 manifold too. They fit exactly the same bolt wise but you will need to convert your oil filter to a mk1 setup as the current mk2 filter blocks the manifold. This is relatively straight forward plenty of people have done it there is a guide on the stickies that show you how to do it.

However there are some manifold that can clear the oil mk2 oil filter and link up with the mk1 system fine. I believe piper manifolds are the only one so might be worth looking it up if you want to avoid the oil filter swap.

As to places to buy Kam racing are the best if you want it brand new. They have a good range and you may be able to sort of saxp discount maybe.

Also have a look for second hand parts. The premium for sale section here has loads of good stuff for sale and various facebook pages always have exhaust parts for sale.

Ahh great thanks mate you've been a great help!
If I was to decat my car it would not pass an MOT would it? Are there any ways around this?

Most likely it won't. Mine failed on emissions with a brand new cat.

Only thing you can do is find lenient MOT'er.

Or have a centre pipe with the de-cat pipe separate and fit a cat just for mot's
