VTR to 16v non starter

  1. #1
Right this is a new thread about my non starter conversion. The old thread was getting a bit clogged up so any help appreciated.

    Back story:

I rebuilt the top end of a 3 Plug VTS engine and dropped it into my 3 plug R. Head work I done was minimal.

Now I've come to start it I'm not getting no joy.

ECU, immobiliser and Barrel are all from the S Donor car and are fine.
I'm getting a spark on an new coil pack.
    New crank sensor fitted.
Injectors were cleaned and I've had them out and tested them, getting a good spray pattern from them all.
    Timing is correct.
Compression tested and getting good results.
Checked the earths, gave them a clean and all is good.

When I try and start I get a couple of coughs and splutters but no actual running.

I'm really stumped now and I really don't know where to go next, I'm really sick.

The only thing I can think of is a possible electrical fault but of I had a problem I wouldn't get a spark or fuel.

    Basically help!!

might sound like a silly response but does the key have the small black immobiliser sensor fitted in the new key fob that's used with the car.
Simply because of that wasn't in there the fuel pump would prime car would turn over but wouldn't Fire up.
    Just a suggestion

Nah everything he has matches and is all of the VTS he scrapped.

As above, Key, barrel, immobiliser and ECU are off the donar car, also tried two known unlocked and working ECU's and it was the same.

    Have you cleared any faults?

    Checked the inertia sensor?

Matt cleared the codes and inertia, check.

Mick, given the timing was clearly visually miles out before, why not try my parts again just for shits and giggles?

Drop me a message, I work in Jesmond off and on, so if we can sort a day when I finish in the afternoon I'll just swing past when I'm already down your way before I go home.

Seriously, the time and money you've put into this. Get rid of it

Also if the timing was wrong and it coughs then have you considered bent valves?

    Shut up Lee

    Lol

It's so close to running man, when you put this much effort in you need to one what's up with it!

Well its hard to see what the problem is without being there tbh. Its got to be either fuel related or a stupid sensor

Money isn't bad, made most of it breaking a few cars, but if time was money fuck me!!

I'm going to put the normal cams backin tomorrow. The guy I bought them off had them fitted but they never ran.

Easy job to switch them so why the fuck not.
  14. #14
Did you establish whether the cams themselves were the correct way round mick? Ie inlet and exhaust?
  15. #15
They are identical as far as I could see, no markings at all. Not like the standard with different numbers stamped in.

Recheck the wiring ie all the earths, tbh i'm running out of ideas.

Just been looking through the thread of common problems on here and found a link to non starts due to ecu power wire problems not getting enough power but here's the link, last 2 pages if you don't want to read it all and just want to dive into testing wires
